What is the 『Kaiji』 Series?
The Kaiji series, created by Fukumoto Nobuyuki, began its serialization in “Weekly Young Magazine” back in 1996. It’s a monumental gambling manga that follows the protagonist, Itou Kaiji (often simply called Kaiji), who is burdened by massive debt and must challenge life-or-death gambles.
The series has captivated readers with its unique original gambles and its distinct portrayal of extreme psychological battles. As of October 2023, the cumulative circulation of the series has exceeded 30 million copies. The latest installment, Toubaku Datenroku Kaiji 24 Oku Dasshutsu Hen, is currently being serialized.
Media Mix and Spin-offs
The Kaiji series has seen various media adaptations over the years. The TV anime series includes Gyakkyou Burai Kaiji Ultimate Survivor, which aired in 2007, and Gyakkyou Burai Kaiji Hakairoku Hen, which aired in 2011. Furthermore, three live-action films have been released between 2009 and 2020, titled Kaiji Jinsei Gyakuten Game, Kaiji 2 Jinsei Dakkai Game, and Kaiji Final Game.
