“Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni” Re-screening from August 1 for 80th Anniversary of War’s End, Suzu-san Turns 100… New Key Visual Revealed!
The feature-length anime film Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni, directed and written by Katafuchi Sunao, has been announced for a limited theatrical re-release across Japan starting August 1, 2025, coinciding with the 80th anniversary of the end of the war this year. To mark the re-screening, a new key visual drawn by director Katafuchi has been unveiled. Additionally, comments have arrived from director Katafuchi, original author Kouno Fumiyo, and the actor/artist Non, who voiced the protagonist Suzu.
Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni is an anime film based on the manga of the same name by Kouno Fumiyo, depicting Suzu, a woman living in Kure, Hiroshima, during wartime who continues to live life looking forward despite losing precious things. Although it premiered in just 63 theaters in 2016, the portrayal of irreplaceable daily life woven with small moments of happiness set against the backdrop of wartime Hiroshima and Kure resonated deeply, eliciting widespread sympathy and emotion. It became a social phenomenon, attracting over 2.1 million viewers, surpassing 2.7 billion yen at the box office, and eventually screening in a cumulative total of 484 theaters.
Furthermore, the film garnered numerous prestigious accolades usually uncommon for anime movies, including Best Animation of the Year at the 40th Japan Academy Film Prize and being ranked number one among Japanese films in the 90th Kinema Junpo Best Ten list. Its critical acclaim also crossed borders, receiving high praise at international film festivals.
If Suzu were still living somewhere in this world today, she would be turning 100 years old this year. This story, which remains in people’s hearts unchanged by the passage of time, will now be revived on the big screen in theaters for a limited time. Regarding the nationwide re-release on the milestone of 80 years after the war, Non, who voiced Suzu, commented, “It makes every day feel precious. For those who haven’t seen this film yet and those who have, please do experience it on the big screen in theaters.”
Original author Kouno shared, “When I drew it, I hoped it would be loved for a long time, even if only by a few. Everyone involved with the film nurtured it strongly and made it soar high. Now, I just watch over it with reliability and pride. I am filled with gratitude!”
Furthermore, director and scriptwriter Katafuchi expressed his thoughts on the screening, stating, “It’s been 9 years since this film was first released. The world cannot escape war. I want to feel once again the corner of the humble world Suzu-san lived in, and the meaning of its irreplaceable preciousness.”
Simultaneously revealed is the new key visual drawn for the re-release, which captures a special moment from the story: the protagonist Suzu facing a fated instant in August 1945. Suzu has lost something precious. A gentle hand placed softly on her head leaves a deep lingering impression on the viewer’s heart. What is Suzu thinking? What is she gazing at? It’s an evocative image that quietly poses questions to the viewer’s heart.
The feature-length anime film Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni, directed and written by Katafuchi Sunao, will be re-released for a limited time nationwide starting August 1, 2025. We look forward to further updates in the future.

Voice of Protagonist Suzu: Non
Hello, I’m Non, who voiced Hojou Suzu in Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni.
Suzu paints pictures. She eats delicious food. She does housework, goes out with her family, and goes on dates.
Hojou Suzu is a person who lives life in her own way. As the days go by, differences with modern Japan emerge. And as you watch, you feel your heart melting into the happiness of an ordinary day. Every day becomes precious.
For those who haven’t seen this film yet and those who have, please do experience it on the big screen in theaters.

I made this film because I wanted to understand the people who lived during the wartime era. 80 years have passed since those days. There are still people who live in the world connected to that time. We too live in a world that continues from there. Perhaps Suzu is also living somewhere, turning 100 years old.
It’s been 9 years since this film was first released. The world cannot escape war.
I want to feel once again the corner of the humble world Suzu-san lived in, and the meaning of its irreplaceable preciousness.
