*Kusuriya no Hitorigoto* (The Apothecary Diaries) is a palace mystery entertainment series based on the novel by Hyuuga Natsu, published by “Hero Bunko” and also serialized as manga in “Big Gangan” and “Sunday GX.” The series boasts over 38 million copies in circulation. Set in a medieval East Asian imperial court, it follows Maomao, a young girl who becomes a “tasting servant” and solves various difficult incidents within the palace.

The first season of the TV anime aired from October 2023, and the second season began in January 2025. It has consistently ranked high on various streaming platforms, attracting significant attention. With the first-ever “TV Anime *Kusuriya no Hitorigoto* Exhibition” opening on March 26th and a collaboration planned for Universal Studios Japan this summer, the series is poised to continue building excitement.

In the previously aired Episode 43, Maomao, who had infiltrated a warehouse with Hyouu, was discovered by the cold woman Shibi. Shibi was a hot topic online, with netizens commenting on how “too scary” she was.

In this Episode 44, Maomao is about to be disciplined by Shibi, but Consort Rouran stops it. Seeing her face, Maomao realizes something, thinking, “Ah, just as I thought.” Indeed, Consort Rouran’s true identity was Shisui.

Thanks to Shisui’s quick thinking, Maomao avoids punishment. However, she is instead imprisoned in a “Toride,” a sturdy structure surrounded by snow, under the guise of being held as a pharmacist. There, she hears about the upbringing of Suirei and Shisui. Maomao deduces that Shishou is the mastermind behind the incidents in the rear palace, which brings her close to uncovering Jinshi’s true identity…

But, in classic Maomao style, she decides to put off thinking about the mystery concerning Jinshi, thinking, “Let’s leave this matter for later!” This prompted online comments like, “She’s so sharp, yet why does she put off thinking about Jinshi lol,” “Poor Jinshi-sama www,” and “That’s so typical of Maomao www.”

Meanwhile, Jinshi, through Rahan’s investigation, had already learned of the “Toride”‘s existence. Rahan appears before him and provokes him, saying, “If you act half-heartedly and do a half-hearted job, do you think anything will go well? What can you do as a half-baked eunuch bastard!” Rahan further requests that Jinshi move the army to defeat the traitor Shishou. Thus spurred on and entrusted with the task, Jinshi finally makes his resolve.
