The anime series Chuugoku Kitan, which has achieved social phenomenon levels of popularity in China, is set to have its world premiere theatrical release in Japan as part of the “Den’eisai” Chinese film festival event. The film will screen for a limited one-week run starting July 4, 2025, in five cities across Japan. Ahead of this highly anticipated premiere, a trailer, the Japanese poster, and captivating scene photos have been unveiled.

About Chuugoku Kitan

Chuugoku Kitan is a web animation series that first premiered in 2023. It was produced by the renowned Shanghai Animation Film Studio, a studio with a celebrated history in Chinese animation, known for classics like Dainou Tenkyuu and Nata Madou Nou Kai.

Rooted deeply in traditional Chinese culture, the series is composed of eight distinct episodes. Each episode tells a unique “strange tale” (怪異譚), blending rich imagination with a diverse array of artistic styles that are distinctly Chinese. The series has seen immense success, surpassing 340 million cumulative views on official streaming platforms, truly creating a social phenomenon across China.

The Theatrical Experience: A World Premiere

At the “Den’eisai” Chinese film festival event, a special theatrical version of Chuugoku Kitan will be screened. This version is a re-edit featuring four carefully selected episodes from the series: “Wan to Kamisama wa Basu ni Notte Itta“, “Youkai-kun no Natsu“, “Baiten“, and “Rinrin“. Significantly, this presentation marks the world premiere of the theatrical cut, happening right here in Japan.
