Kaijuu 8-gou: Kikoru’s Mother Played by Mitsuishi Kotono! Season 2 Main PV & ED Theme Released

The TV anime *Kaijuu 8-gou* Season 2 is set to broadcast and stream starting July 19, 2025. With the broadcast nearing, the main PV for Season 2, titled “**Isshi no Keishou**”篇 (Chapter of Inherited Will), has been released. Furthermore, the ending theme has been decided as “**Beautiful Colors**” by **OneRepublic**, and it was also revealed that **Mitsuishi Kotono** will play the role of **Shinomiya Kikoru**’s mother, **Shinomiya Hikari**.

*Kaijuu 8-gou* is a thrilling kaijuu battle action manga by **Matsumoto Naoya**, serialized on Shueisha’s manga app “**Shounen Jump+**” since July 2020. Including digital versions, the collected volumes have exceeded 18 million copies in circulation domestically.

In a world where kaijuu routinely threaten people, **Hibino Kafka**, who works in kaijuu specialized cleaning, was just starting to chase his old dream of joining the “**Nihon Boueitai**” (Japan Defense Force) to exterminate kaijuu. However, he is suddenly transformed into a kaijuu possessing immense power by a mysterious small kaijuu. Named “**Kaijuu 8-gou**” and hunted throughout Japan, Kafka still doesn’t give up on his dream of becoming a Defense Force member and confronts kaijuu disasters.

The TV anime, with animation production by Production I.G and kaijuu design & works by Studio Color, began airing its first season in April 2024. It gained immense popularity and drew significant attention both in Japan and internationally, thanks to its appealing characters like **Kafka**, who continues to chase his Defense Force dream despite experiencing setbacks, the tense battles against kaijuu, and the bonds of companionship among the characters. In the highly anticipated Season 2, **Kafka**, who is being held by the Defense Force as “**Kaijuu 8-gou**,” will face the Defense Force’s strongest man, **Narumi Gen**. Additionally, the emergence of evolved threats will place the Defense Force in an unprecedented crisis.

Now, from this work, the main PV for Season 2, “**Isshi no Keishou**”篇, which showcases the rise of the next generation, has been released. **Shinomiya Kikoru**, who aimed for the Defense Force to become her mother’s strength, carries the oath in her heart: “I won’t let my companions die on the battlefield where I stand.” And **Kafka**, who unexpectedly became a kaijuu, also transforms his resolve to believe in his companions into power, now awakening. The will of the Defense Force, inherited from individuals like **Shinomiya Isao** and **Hikari** to **Narumi Gen** and **Ashiro Mina**, is now being passed down to the next generation, **Kafka** and **Kikoru**. In this world where people are protected from kaijuu, how will the Defense Force members, fighting with the feelings entrusted to them by their predecessors, grow and illuminate the future? Following Season 1, anticipation is high for Season 2, where the characters’ emotions will be even more deeply explored.

Furthermore, the PV, themed around the Defense Force’s passionate resolve, is colored by the ending theme, “**Beautiful Colors**”. This song is by OneRepublic, who also handled the ending themes for Season 1 and the bonus episode “**Hoshina no Kyujitsu**” (Hoshina’s Day Off), garnering worldwide acclaim. “**Beautiful Colors**” is said to be a song lyricalized with the theme of “someone discovering the charm that the person themselves cannot see.” Regarding the song that vividly colors the hidden passion of **Kafka** and **Kikoru** as they battle kaijuu, OneRepublic offered comments such as, “Although the song style is completely different, we hope that the feelings we poured into this season and this work will be truly felt.”

Furthermore, it was revealed that **Mitsuishi Kotono**, known for roles such as **Tsukino Usagi / Sailor Moon** in *Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon*, **Katsuragi Misato** in *Shin Seiki Evangelion*, and **Boa Hancock** in *ONE PIECE*, will play the role of **Shinomiya Kikoru**’s deceased mother, **Shinomiya Hikari**. Kikoru is **Kafka**’s good rival and was assigned to the First Division along with him.

**Mitsuishi Kotono** commented, “As a Defense Force member, she is a cool and strong woman to be admired, and at home, she is a caring mother who thinks of her family. I made an effort to portray her gracefully and vibrantly. I can’t help but think that if there were no kaijuu in the world, she would have lived a happy life with her family… Since her appearance scenes are few, I cherished the time she had with **Kikoru**, **Isao**, and her colleagues.
