The TV anime Chibi Maruko-chan is set to deliver a heartwarming and slightly mysterious episode on July 20, 2025, titled “Maruko, Staying Overnight at the Library”. It sounds like a truly magical night!
Based on the original manga by Sakura Momoko, Chibi Maruko-chan is a beloved series that paints a warm and often humorous picture of the everyday life of the Sakura family, centered around Maruko (Sakura Momoko), a third-grader, and her friends and family in Shimizu City, Shizuoka Prefecture (now Shimizu Ward, Shizuoka City). It’s a story filled with fun, laughter, and sometimes a touch of sadness, truly touching the heart.
The original manga serialization began in “Ribon” magazine in 1986, celebrating its 35th anniversary in 2021. The 18 volumes of the manga have surpassed a cumulative circulation of 35 million copies, including digital versions, and have been published internationally in various Asian countries and France. The TV anime first aired in 1990 and continues to be broadcast every Sunday at 6:00 PM on the Fuji Television network. Popular in areas like the Greater China region and other countries, it has captivated audiences of all ages worldwide and continues to be cherished.
The episode airing on July 20, “Maruko, Staying Overnight at the Library,” begins with Maruko feeling a bit bored during the start of summer vacation, as she has no plans to go anywhere special. Her mother brings home a flyer promoting a special summer event at the library: “How about staying overnight at the library?” Intrigued, Maruko decides to participate along with her friend Tamachan and their classmates.

Maruko and her friends are thrilled by the library’s unusual atmosphere at night – it’s quiet and still, and they even get to enter the book storage areas, which are usually off-limits. The joyful time spent picking out books and reading to their hearts’ content flies by quickly, and soon it’s lights out. Wrapped in their sleeping bags in the dimly lit library, with only lamps providing a gentle glow, Maruko and the others are filled with excitement. Just then, a rabbit appears, dressed in a tuxedo and holding a silver watch…?

In this special episode, Hidaka Rina, who actually voiced Anne in the 26th installment of the “World Masterpiece Theater” series, Konnichiwa Anne ~Before Green Gables~, which aired in 2009, will once again lend her voice to Anne!

We can’t wait to see what Anne and Diana will look like! And how exactly will Maruko and Marco meet and interact? This episode is perfect for a summer night, so be sure not to miss it!
