New GeGeGe Ukiyo-e Prints Feature ‘Kitaro u Tanjou GeGeGe no Nazo’ and the TV Anime’s World
New works in the GeGeGe no Kitaro u ukiyo-e series are here. Starting July 14, 2025, collaborative ukiyo-e prints featuring the movie Kitaro u Tanjou GeGeGe no Nazo and the TV anime GeGeGe no Kitaro u will be available at the online shop “Ban San Ukiyo-e Koubou.”
GeGeGe no Kitaro u first began its TV anime broadcast on January 3, 1968. The series has been loved for over half a century, with the sixth TV anime season airing until March 2020.
The movie Kitaro u Tanjou GeGeGe no Nazo, released in November 2023, received high praise, including winning the Award for Excellence in Animation at the 47th Japan Academy Film Prize.
The “GeGeGe Ukiyo-e” series, which expresses the world of GeGeGe no Kitaro u using ukiyo-e techniques, has released eight previous works. In particular, the collaboration pieces with the movie Kitaro u Tanjou GeGeGe no Nazo were highly popular, selling out and receiving many requests for reprints.
Now, the release of two new “GeGeGe Ukiyo-e” prints has been decided. They are “Hanachirashi no Yuugi,” a collaboration piece with the movie Kitaro u Tanjou GeGeGe no Nazo, and “Youkai Douro,” a collaboration piece with the sixth TV anime series GeGeGe no Kitaro u.
“Hanachirashi no Yuugi” depicts the friendship between Kitaro u’s Father and Mizuki, similar to the previous two works “Akatsuki no Tomo” and “Michizure no Shaku.” The motifs are inspired by ukiyo-e such as Utagawa Kuniyoshi’s “Kaminarishoukuro u (Shoukuro u),” Utagawa Yoshiharu’s “Aoto Go tou Hana no Nishikie: Shiranamigo n Otoko,” and Utagawa Kunisada (Sandai Utagawa Toyokuni)’s “Hana Sasou Yoshiwara no Yoruame: Azuma Hakkei no Uchi, Nakamura Utaemon.” The subtle imagery of Mizuki holding an umbrella over Kitaro u’s Father and Kitaro u’s Father captivated by the dancing cherry blossoms and snow quietly conveys the warmth of their bond.
“Youkai Douro” is inspired by the Tsukumogami Emaki, which features tsukumogami, and the scenery of a certain road known for a legendary rock band. It is a work that captures the lively and mysterious world of the characters from the sixth season. Both prints are priced at 33,000 JPY each (including tax).
