Anime! Anime! conducted its annual reader survey titled “Who is your favorite ‘Flower/Plant’ character?”. We are now announcing the results.

August 7th marks “Flower Day”! This special day was established with a clever Japanese pun, playing on “ha” (8) and “na” (7) which together form “hana” (flower).

The world of anime is full of characters who share deep connections with flowers and plants. You’ll find characters adorned in flower-motif costumes or wielding botanical weapons, those who can commune with plant life, experts in floral knowledge and flower language, or even individuals blessed with special abilities harnessing the power of nature.

That’s why Anime! Anime! conducted its annual reader survey titled “Who is your favorite ‘Flower/Plant’ character?”. We received 437 responses during the survey period from July 23rd to July 29th.

The gender ratio was approximately 40 percent male and 60 percent female, indicating a slightly higher participation from women. Regarding age, the majority were younger respondents, with about 50 percent being 19 years old or younger and 20 percent in their 20s.

■ More Than Just Pretty! Flower Characters Full of Surprises

1st Place

Coming in at 1st place is Flowey from 『Undertale』. securing approximately 19 percent of the votes and topping the list for the second consecutive year.

Readers were captivated by this character, who is the first flower encountered by the player at the very beginning of the game. Comments praised the strong impact Flowey made: “Initially appearing as a tutorial guide, they end up deceiving the player and even understand the game’s save and load mechanics, which is quite shocking.” Another reader remarked, “‘Howdy! I’m Flowey. Flowey the Flower!’ That’s how he introduces himself. He’s actually a crucial character at the heart of the story, so he left a lasting impression.” The adorable visual contrasting with Flowey’s true nature was a major talking point. This year, with the game celebrating its 10th anniversary and an anniversary concert on the horizon, 『Undertale』 continues to capture attention.

2nd Place

Securing 2nd place is Tsuyuri Kanao from 『Kimetsu no Yaiba』, rising from 3rd place last year with approximately 11 percent of the votes.

Readers shared their admiration for Kanao-chan: “She’s a prodigious swordsman who independently mastered the Flower Breathing technique of the late Flower Hashira, Kochou Kanae. Initially, she didn’t show much emotion, but through her interactions with Tanjiro, her expressions blossomed, much like a flower bud opening.” Another comment highlighted her unique name: “Kanao was the reason I learned the surname ‘Tsuyuri’. It’s so poetic that its pronunciation comes from the time when the rainy season (tsuyu) overlaps with chestnuts (kuri) falling!” Many voters mentioned the current movie: “After watching the movie, I just had to vote for Kanao. I can’t wait to see what happens next!” Her active role in the currently released 『Gekijouban Kimetsu no Yaiba Mugenjou-hen Dai Isshou Akaza Sairai』 is certainly keeping her in the spotlight.

3rd Place

Taking 3rd place is Kurama from 『Yuu☆Yuu☆Hakusho』. The support rate was approximately 6 percent, moving up from 5th place last year to enter the top 3.

Kurama, once a renowned Youko (fox demon) in the Demon World, is now reincarnated and living as a high school student, Minamino Shuuichi, in the Human World. Fans were drawn to his captivating persona, with one commenting, “He’s a plant-manipulating Youko, and his signature move is the Rose Whip, which turns roses into a formidable whip. His elegant fighting style is so captivating, I almost wish I could smell that rose fragrance!” Another fan was captivated by his duality: “While possessing beauty often mistaken for a woman’s, I was utterly charmed by his ruthless side, showing no mercy to unforgivable enemies. The famous line, ‘How ironic, the blood of a villain makes a prettier flower…’, which he utters when he makes seeds he planted in an enemy’s body bloom to end their life, truly symbolizes him.” His beautiful yet terrifying character image continues to be a favorite.

■ Other Comments Introduced!

For Merlin from 『Fate/Grand Order』, a comment stated, “He’s a high-ranking mage known as the Flower Mage. The surprising and adorable reason for this epithet is simply that he loves flowers. His Noble Phantasm, 『Eikyuu ni Tozasareta Risoukyou』(Garden of Avalon), where petals burst into full bloom, is truly fantastical.”

Regarding Thorn=Yuriev from 『#COMPASS 2.0 Sentou Setsuri Kaiseki System』, a reader shared, “When he uses his special move, Icicle Road, the sight of an ice flower garden blooming on the ground is beautiful. Even his theme song, 『Yadorigi』, features blue flowers in its artwork.”

For Kikyou from 『InuYasha』, a fan commented, “The Kikyou flower’s language is ‘unchanging love’. It’s also used as a medicinal herb, and its history of helping people for centuries resonates deeply with her role as a miko (shrine maiden).”

And for Lilymon from 『Digimon Adventure』, a vote was cast with the reason: “She’s a Fairy-type Digimon born from a flower. With her petal costume, leaf wings, and hair that drapes like rose vines, her entire body embodies a flower.” This character hails from a title that recently announced a new series, 『DIGIMON BEATBREAK』.

This year’s survey revealed a collection of characters who not only embody the delicate image of flowers and plants but also possess profound backstories. It’s also noteworthy that many of the characters are from games, led by the top-ranking 『Undertale』, followed by 『Touhou Project』, 『Akuma Shitsuji to Kuroi Neko』, and 『Super Mario Bros.』.
