Eva Rei, Asuka, Mari are Serene Beauties! Eva Ukiyo-e with a “Hoo San Bijin Zu” Motif is Released

The highly anticipated “Eva Ukiyo-e Hakone Hachiri Bijin Sanga Zoroi,” the first installment of the “Eva Japonism” project from the renowned Evangelion series, is now available! Sales commenced on August 29, 2025, via the Bansank online shop.

The Enduring Legacy of Evangelion

In 1995, Anno Hideaki unleashed Shin Seiki Evangelion, a 26-episode TV anime series that captivated audiences worldwide. This science fiction masterpiece, depicting young pilots battling mysterious “Angels” aboard colossal humanoid mecha, enthralled countless fans with its expansive world-building and meticulously crafted details. Its media expansion into comics, films, and games ignited a social phenomenon that continues to resonate today.

The series reached its cinematic conclusion in 2021 with the release of Shin Evangelion Gekijouban, which became the franchise’s biggest hit, raking in an astounding 10.28 billion JPY at the box office.

Introducing the “Eva Japonism” Project

Building on the enduring popularity of the Evangelion series, which consistently attracts new fans across diverse demographics, a groundbreaking new art project called “Eva Japonism” has officially launched! This exciting initiative is produced by Bansank Co., Ltd., an ukiyo-e publisher dedicated to preserving the traditional ukiyo-e culture that has flourished since the Edo period.

The project endeavors to create a fresh expression of Japanese beauty, perfectly suited for the modern age, by seamlessly blending the captivating world of Evangelion with the profound aesthetic sensibilities embedded in traditional Japanese craftsmanship.

The very first release from “Eva Japonism” is the stunning “Eva Ukiyo-e Hakone Hachiri Bijin Sanga Zoroi.” This exquisite series draws inspiration from “Hoou San Bijinzu” (Three Beauties of Phoenix), a famous triptych by Kitagawa Utamaro, a legendary ukiyo-e artist from the Edo period renowned for his beautiful women (bijinga) portraits. In this reimagining, the three beloved heroines—Rei, Asuka, and Mari—are masterfully depicted as elegant princesses.

This unique collection envisions the world of Evangelion as if it were an “otogi-banashi” (fairytale or folktale) witnessed and passed down by people of ancient times. It sparks the imagination, asking: “If Evangelion had existed during the Edo period, how would people have immortalized it in ukiyo-e?”

The result is a harmonious fusion of traditional culture and contemporary pop culture, giving birth to new narratives and beauty. Bansank Co., Ltd., known for its distinctive ukiyo-e playfulness, has infused this spirit throughout the collection. These pieces offer an exceptional opportunity to experience a “new Evangelion” through a truly unique artistic lens.

These magnificent works will be available for a limited time starting Friday, August 29th, via Bansank’s official online shop, “Ukiyo-e Koubou.”
