Fans of Studio Ghibli’s deeply cherished film, Mimi wo Sumaseba, often known internationally as Whisper of the Heart, recently had a rare chance to truly immerse themselves in its enchanting world. On October 11th and 12th, a special guide tour was held in Seiseki Sakuragaoka, the very real-life location that inspired the film’s charming and unforgettable setting. This one-hour walking tour invited participants to explore iconic spots, beginning at the “Seishun no Post” and meandering through “Sakura Doori”, up “Iroha Zaka”, and around the “Sakuragaoka Rotary”.

The Enduring Heart of “Mimi wo Sumaseba”

The captivating narrative of Mimi wo Sumaseba began as a youthful romance manga by Hiiragi Aoi, first serialized in the popular shoujo comic magazine “Ribon” back in 1989. It beautifully portrays the earnest devotion of Tsukishima Shizuku, a middle school girl with a deep love for books, as she gradually falls for Amasawa Seiji, a boy who is wholeheartedly pursuing his dreams. This tender and heartwarming story was adapted into an animated film by Studio Ghibli in 1995, instantly capturing the hearts of audiences worldwide. Even after all these years, the film continues to garner immense support, with frequent broadcasts on television solidifying its place as a timeless classic.
