Auditions by “Cassette Tape”?! Shimono Hiroshi & Irino Miyu Reflect on the Heisei Era!

During the opening segment, in response to a request from the Wednesday MCs to “share your Heisei memories,” the duo delved into their cherished memories of the Heisei era. Irino Miyu enthusiastically declared himself “a total Digimon generation kid, completely hooked during elementary school.” Shimono Hiroshi resonated with this sentiment, reminiscing, “How many times have I sung ‘Butter-Fly’ (the opening theme for TV anime Digimon Adventure), at karaoke?” Given that both have voiced protagonists in the Digimon series, they gleefully exclaimed, “We’re Digimon!” and hyped up the audience, declaring, “Tuesdays are all about Digimon! We’re the dual protagonists of Digimon!”

The conversation also naturally shifted to the unique world of voice actor auditions during the Heisei period. Irino Miyu recalled, “When it came to tape auditions, nowadays you’d use a smartphone or a voice recorder, but back then, it was all about cassette tapes. You’d record your voice onto a cassette and mail it in.” Shimono Hiroshi likewise reminisced, “I’m from the MD generation. My demo tape when joining the agency was on MD. Since I didn’t have any recording equipment, I used to borrow my dad’s stereo system to record.” They also touched upon the popular music and games of that era. Irino Miyu expressed, “It’s super cool, isn’t it, to be voicing characters in the very works you grew up playing and enjoying?” to which Shimono Hiroshi wholeheartedly agreed, “Absolutely, it’s incredibly exciting.”

New Corner “Minna no Iraira Jouka Sakusen” Kicks Off… But Unexpected Direction Leaves Shimono Hiroshi & Irino Miyu Blushing Deeply?!

In the latter half of the program, they launched a brand-new segment called “Minna no Iraira Jouka Sakusen” (Operation: Purify Everyone’s Irritation). In this corner, Shimono Hiroshi and Irino Miyu kindly empathized with the audience’s minor daily frustrations, responding with a resounding “I totally get it!” countless times. However, the “purification” segment, designed to transform “irritation” into “sparkle,” came with an unexpected twist. Standing in front of a green screen, they were instructed to deliver a cheesy catchphrase directly to the camera: “I’ll turn that irritation into sparkle,” accompanied by a finger-snap that transformed the blurry screen background into a dazzling, sparkling one.

This left Irino Miyu absolutely flustered, as he cried out, “This is so embarrassing! This is unbelievable!”, adding, “To think this footage will exist forever…” and “It’s so lame! That’s a Heisei-era effect right there!” Shimono Hiroshi, too, forced a wry smile, commenting, “I don’t know… The viewers might have been purified, but I feel like something is accumulating inside us…” Despite their embarrassment, the audience reactions were overwhelmingly positive, with comments flooding in like “What is this www It’s too good www”, “?????????”, “Not what I expected www”, and “But it’s the best w”, leading to immense excitement and engagement.

Additionally, the hosts held a discussion about future developments as they approached the halfway point of the season. They also unveiled an evolved version of the “Byou de Hyougen! 1 Moji Gekijou” (Express in Seconds! One-Character Theater) segment, now titled “Jiyuu ni Hyougen! 1 Moji Gekijou NEO” (Express Freely! One-Character Theater NEO). This updated corner introduced a more flexible rule: dialogue was now allowed during their short skits. The studio was enveloped in even more laughter as the two engaged in comical impromptu performances, tackling scenarios such as expressing “Ha” when “a junior arrives late, casually walking in with earphones on,” or when “discovering an acquaintance in the midst of an affair.”
