The *EVANGELION* series first exploded onto the scene, creating a massive social phenomenon with the broadcast of its TV series, *Shin Seiki Evangelion* (also known as *Neon Genesis Evangelion*), in 1995. The saga was then brilliantly relaunched as the *Evangelion Shin Gekijou-ban* (also known as *Rebuild of Evangelion*) series starting in 2007. Its three films, *Jo* (Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone), *Ha* (Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance), and *Kyuu* (Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo), each became colossal box office successes. The grand finale, *Shin Evangelion Gekijou-ban* (also known as *Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time*), which premiered in 2021, made history as the first film in the series to surpass 10 billion yen in box office revenue, generating immense excitement and discussion worldwide.
This “Tsukiichi Eva,” officially known as the “Tsukiichi Eva EVANGELION 30th MOVIE Fest.2025-2026,” is being held to honor the series’ monumental 30th anniversary in 2025. It’s a fantastic initiative that will see six beloved theatrical films from the series re-screened for a limited time, running from October 2025 through February 2026. Each month will feature one film (with two special screenings in October), with each film enjoying a one-week run.
The festival kicked off with its first installment, *Shin Seiki Evangelion Gekijou-ban Shi to Shinsei* (though the version screened was its enhanced successor, *DEATH (TRUE)2&REBIRTH*, also known as *Evangelion: Death(true)²*), starting on October 10th. Its overwhelming popularity led to extended screening periods in numerous theaters, culminating in an impressive turnout of over 120,000 attendees and box office earnings exceeding 200 million yen.
Building on this incredible momentum, the second installment, *Shin Seiki Evangelion Gekijou-ban Air/Magokoro wo, Kimi ni* (The End of Evangelion), has been captivating audiences since October 24th. Much like the first installment, *Shi to Shinsei*, this film is drawing a diverse crowd, uniting generations of fans. From those who experienced it in real-time upon its original 1997 release to younger enthusiasts who weren’t even born then, everyone is flocking to theaters, resulting in a wave of sold-out screenings across many locations.
In just three days leading up to October 26th, *The End of Evangelion* garnered a staggering 125,313,500 yen in box office revenue and attracted 79,034 attendees. According to Kogyo Tsushinsha’s weekend audience attendance rankings, it proudly secured the 5th position despite being screened in only 89 theaters. This remarkable achievement, with a film released in 1997 breaking into the top 10 after 28 years, truly underscores the enduring love and widespread adoration for the *EVANGELION* series.
Looking ahead, “Tsukiichi Eva” promises even more excitement! Next month, starting November 14th, fans can anticipate the screening of *Evangelion Shin Gekijou-ban: Jo* (also known as *Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone*). Furthermore, mark your calendars for a grand three-day festival, “EVANGELION 30+; 30th ANNIVERSARY OF EVANGELION,” the first of its kind for the series, scheduled to take place from February 21st to 23rd next year. Get ready to immerse yourself in the world of *EVANGELION* in many exciting ways!
