A Blast from the Past: Yoroitsuden Samurai Trooper Legacy
Yoroitsuden Samurai Trooper, produced by Sunrise, was a legendary TV anime that captivated audiences from April 1988 to March 1989. The series followed five young boys, destined to unite as they wielded their “Yoroigia” (armor gear) to combat the forces of the Youja, led by the formidable Youja Teiou Arago. The franchise expanded beyond the TV series with three OVA works: Yoroitsuden Samurai Trooper Gaiden (1989), Yoroitsuden Samurai Trooper Kikoutei Densetsu (1989-1990), and Yoroitsuden Samurai Trooper MESSAGE (1991). The adventure also leaped into the world of manga with a popular comic adaptation by Hoshino Ryuichi in “Comic BomBom.”
The New Era: Yoroishin-den Samurai Trooper Production Details
Now, as its direct sequel, Yoroishin-den Samurai Trooper is ready to open a new chapter with a completely original story, set against the backdrop of modern-day Shinjuku. The new series boasts a stellar team, led by director Fujita Youichi, known for his work on hits like Gintama and Osomatsu-san. Animation production is handled by SUNRISE Studios, an animation studio under Bandai Namco Filmworks. The series composition and script are penned by Mutou Shougo, who has a knack for action-packed stories, having worked on titles such as Kamen Rider Build, the live-action film Crows Zero, and Thermae Romae. The main character design is entrusted to Murota Yuuhei, a name familiar to fans of Love Live!, Love Live! Sunshine!!, and Tokidoki Bosotto Russia-go de Dereru Tonari no Alya-san.
Adding to this impressive lineup, Okamoto Hideo, who designed the original Yoroigia for Yoroitsuden Samurai Trooper and recently contributed monster designs to SSSS.DYNAZENON, is back as the Yoroigia design original concept artist. This truly is an assembly of top-tier talent! The new generation of Samurai Troopers will be brought to life by a magnificent cast of five voice actors who have graced many popular titles: Ishibashi Hiiro as Kai, Enoki Junya as Uesugi Kaito, Murase Ayumu as Houjou Musashi, Takeuchi Shunsuke as Houjou Yamato, and Kumagai Kentarou as Ishida Shion.
The newly unveiled main visual is a sight to behold, depicting the five valiant Samurai Troopers clad in their Yoroigia, with the imposing Youja Teiou Rashin-ga lurking ominously in the background. It strongly hints at the intense battles to come between the Samurai Troopers and the Youja, leaving us with the feeling that “Kore wa Tadagoto ja nee!” (This is no ordinary situation!) The main promotional video further expands on the narrative, introducing members of the DST who support the five Samurai Troopers: Oda Ryuusei and Aragaki Mirei. Moreover, the PV partially reveals Youja Teiou Rashin-ga and five of the Juuyuushi (Ten Warriors) who serve him, setting the stage for epic confrontations.
Among the newly announced cast, Masuda Toshiki will voice Oda Ryuusei, the elder brother figure to the five Samurai Troopers. Lynn takes on the role of Aragaki Mirei, the self-proclaimed heroine of DST. Konishi Katsuyuki steps into the shoes of the fearsome Youja Teiou Rashin-ga. Serving Rashin-ga are five of his Juuyuushi: Satou Takuya as Sasuke, Toriumi Kousuke as Saizou, Terashima Takuma as Kamanosuke, Sugita Tomokazu as Seikai Nyudou, and Amasaki Kouhei as Isa Nyudou. Each of these talented actors has also shared their excitement for joining the project.
The anime will feature blank paper for the opening theme song and ONE OR EIGHT for the ending theme song. The main promotional video already gives us a taste of blank paper’s opening theme, “YOAKE,” perfectly accompanying the intense and thrilling battle scenes as the Samurai Troopers clash with the Youja. Both blank paper and ONE OR EIGHT have also shared their comments, promising a powerful auditory experience.

Comments from the Cast and Artists
Oda Ryuusei: Masuda Toshiki

Hello, this is Masuda Toshiki, playing Oda Ryuusei. Ryuusei is a bit of an older brother figure. I’ll do my best to make him feel like a reliable character, so he doesn’t lose to the exciting main characters!
Aragaki Mirei: Lynn

I’m truly happy to be entrusted with the role of Mirei. She’s a self-proclaimed heroine! I believe those whose hearts were once set ablaze by the original series will find their hearts burning even brighter with this sequel. And even if this is your first time watching Samurai Trooper, the story is welcoming! Plus, the visual power, the animation’s touch, and dynamism are amazing! You’ll see when you watch it. It’s incredible. Please watch it!!
Rashin-ga: Konishi Katsuyuki

I’m so thrilled to be able to participate in that Samurai Trooper! I wish I could tell my younger self! I plan to absolutely crush those Troopers. After about 30 years, please check out with your own eyes and ears how Samurai Trooper has evolved!!
Sasuke: Satou Takuya

My oldest memory of a Christmas gift from Santa was a replica toy of the “Rekka Ken” from the Kikoutei, who appears in Yoroitsuden Samurai Trooper. I honestly wished I had received the “Choudan-dou Series” armor instead… I remember playing with it constantly, even while thinking that. That’s how cool the Samurai Troopers, appearing from flowing cloth and scattered flower petals with their cry of “Buso!” (Armament!), looked to my young self. And now, I get to appear in the Reiwa-era Samurai Trooper! Are you watching, 4-year-old me?! I will be playing a character named Sasuke. The recording studio is filled with energy and passion. Please look forward to the newly unfolding battles of these samurai!
Saizou: Toriumi Kousuke

I am Toriumi Kousuke, and I will be playing Saizou this time. It is a great honor to participate in the sequel to the legendary work Samurai Trooper. I hope you will look forward to Yoroishin-den Samurai Trooper. Thank you for your support.
Kamanosuke: Terashima Takuma

I’m Terashima Takuma, playing Kamanosuke. Just like his very unique visual, he’s a unique guy on the inside too! Both the Trooper side and our side are full of quirky characters. This is the new Samurai Trooper! It’s incredibly interesting, so please look forward to it!
Seikai Nyudou: Sugita Tomokazu

I’m Sugita Tomokazu, playing Seikai Nyudou. If I were to comment that my younger brother (Isa Nyudou) and I, Amasaki Kouhei, are like real brothers, I might be told, “Aren’t you more like father and son?” That’s perfectly fine, so please give your support to Yoroishin-den Samurai Trooper.
Isa Nyudou: Amasaki Kouhei

I will be playing Isa Nyudou! I’m so happy to be able to appear in the latest work of such a historical series. I’ve been having so much fun participating in every recording session. Please pay special attention to the interactions with my older brother, Seikai Nyudou!
blank paper
When the shadows of the Youjakai once again loom over the world,
it is sound and rhythm that herald the dawn of battle.
“YOAKE” is a musical medicine that resonates with the soul of the Samurai Trooper.
Just as armor awakens the warrior,
this song activates the light within you.
As their battle begins, let your heartbeat align with theirs.
That resonance will become the dawn of a new era.
SOUMA (ONE OR EIGHT)
It is a great honor to be involved in this memorable work, Yoroishin-den Samurai Trooper. When I first received the offer for the tie-up, my heart pounded, thinking, “Kore wa Tadagoto de wa nai!” (This is no ordinary situation!) “POWER” fully embodies ONE OR EIGHT’s unique “power of martial arts.” I hope you’ll enjoy listening to it along with the series.
NEO (ONE OR EIGHT)
When I heard that our song was chosen as the anime’s ending theme, my heart truly swelled with emotion. This song is themed around “the moment power overflows,” imbued with an energy that switches on the moment you hear it. It strongly links with the world of the anime, and I believe it has become a track that will further energize the series. And I’m so happy that this song, which I was deeply involved in creating for the first time, will reach many people as an ending theme. I hope it becomes a song that can move the hearts of many, transcending genres and generations.
YUGA (ONE OR EIGHT)
I’m truly happy to be in charge of an anime’s ending theme song for the first time. We poured our future aspirations and strong determination to overcome any challenges into this song. It has a catchy and powerful finish, so please listen to it a lot!
TAKERU (ONE OR EIGHT)
When I heard that “POWER” was chosen as the ending theme for Yoroishin-den Samurai Trooper, I was genuinely thrilled and excited. This “POWER” expresses our feelings of conviction and friendship, “We will lead everyone upwards,” with a dynamic sound. We feel that the series’ portrayal of “moving forward while confronting weaknesses and conflicts” links with ONE OR EIGHT’s attitude of continuing “all-or-nothing challenges.” I hope that through this anime, many people will receive the courage to strive and the power of camaraderie – that “POWER” will reach them.
TSUBASA (ONE OR EIGHT)
I was truly surprised when I received the offer for an anime tie-up! I myself grew up with anime and manga, so I was overjoyed, and at the same time, I felt a sense of renewed determination.
RYOTA (ONE OR EIGHT)
I am very happy to have been chosen for an anime ending theme for the first time. As the song title suggests, “POWER” is a powerful and energetic track, and I feel it strongly matches the world of the series. I hope that many people will enjoy this song along with the anime.
MIZUKI (ONE OR EIGHT)
When I heard that this song was chosen as the ending theme for Yoroishin-den Samurai Trooper, I was simply very happy. It’s truly an honor that ONE OR EIGHT’s first anime ending theme is for this historic work, and I can’t wait for the anime’s release, thinking that the song will reach people who didn’t know us before. “POWER” expresses not an external push, but strength welling up from within. It is a song imbued with the will to move forward powerfully, even while carrying weaknesses and traumas. I hope this song can become a source of vitality for as many people as possible to move forward.
REIA (ONE OR EIGHT)
I was truly honored and happy that “POWER” was chosen as the ending theme song for Yoroishin-den Samurai Trooper. We created this song while valuing the presence of the people and companions who supported us, and the strength to stand up again, even after stumbling and experiencing setbacks many times ourselves. Through this anime, I hope many people will listen to “POWER” and that our feelings and power will reach them.
