2025 also saw the anime scene dominated by numerous isekai and fantasy works, but “tensei-mono” (reincarnation stories) like ‘Akuyaku Reijou Tensei Oji-san’, ‘Tondemo Skill de Isekai Hourou Meshi 2’, and ‘Tensei Akujo no Kuro Rekishi’ continue to enjoy steady popularity. Why do isekai reincarnation stories grip people’s hearts so strongly? The reason may lie in a catharsis born from conventions similar to those in period dramas…⁉

The charm of isekai reincarnation stories is, above all, a refreshing, ‘Sukatto’ Catharsis!

The original light novel for ‘Tensei shitara Slime Datta Ken’ (That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, often abbreviated as ‘Tensura’), one of the catalysts for the isekai reincarnation genre boom, released its final volume in late November. Twelve years since its serialization began on the novel posting site “Shousetsuka ni Narou” in 2013. Having raced at the forefront of isekai reincarnation works, ‘Tensura’ has also announced a 4th anime season and a new theatrical anime film, ensuring it will remain a top runner in the genre. The reason for the popularity of ‘Tensura’ and other isekai reincarnation works? It’s surely the “refreshing, ‘sukatto’ catharsis“.

Through the flow from novel posting sites to light novel adaptations, manga adaptations, and finally anime, isekai reincarnation stories have swept across the world in recent years, becoming a popular genre. This season, too, numerous isekai works are gaining attention as anime. The protagonists, who enter another world with their pre-reincarnation abilities and knowledge, use these to create things that don’t exist in that world, enrich their lives, or shrewdly gain power. Often, they are reincarnated with special abilities—like high magic power (or no magic but high physical strength in a world where magic exists) or into noble positions—possessing powers far exceeding the people of that world.

From the moment they regain their memories, they wield cheat-like abilities to easily overcome difficulties or see through villains’ schemes, evoking a feeling in viewers that makes their chests feel clear. This is precisely the factor that makes it “sukatto” (refreshing). Viewers who identify with the oppressed protagonist, thinking, “I wish someone would put that nasty person in their place,” find that wish fulfilled dashingly by the isekai-reincarnated protagonists.

Conventions Resonating with Period Dramas: “This Seal is…”

This “sukkato” expression shares a sense of convention with period dramas. For example, in an “isekai reincarnation” story, the “villainess” or the “saint” about to lose her position might act to avoid her bad ending, only to be told by her fiancé in front of a crowd, “I annul my engagement to you.” Next to that fiancé is a young lady who appears lovely but is black-hearted, clinging closely to him. That fiancé and young lady are, to put it bluntly, typically the “makes-your-stomach-churn” type. And then, a higher-status man comes to the rescue of the villainess or saint, showering her with溺愛 (dotei, doting love), leading to a sharp, clean counterattack where the annulling fiancé or the scheming young lady meets their downfall.

Watching that scene is what gives you that “clear-chested” feeling. There are also popular isekai reincarnation stories where a protagonist reincarnated as an adventurer, who actually possesses tremendous power, gets kicked out of their party or is oppressed by those around them, but turns the tables through sheer grit or forms bonds with new companions, offering a爽快 (soukai, refreshing) feeling. This feels close to the classic period drama formula that was once hugely popular: “This seal is…” or “What?! He wasn’t just a layabout? He was the Shogun!?”, where someone hides their true strength, operates in the shadows, and achieves poetic justice.

Moreover, these protagonists often have experienced hardships before reincarnation, so they tend to act with kindness, siding with the weak and helping those in vulnerable positions. Their kindness is also part of their charm. Beings who conceal overwhelming strength, cut down evil, and possess a heart that leans towards the weak. That is the essence of isekai reincarnation protagonists.

The Protagonist’s Counter-Punch Lets You Strike a Mental ‘Guts Pose’: “Zamaa (laugh)”

The worldview of oppressed protagonists remembering their past lives, awakening, and enacting poetic justice is what makes isekai reincarnation works popular. Is it due to a catharsis—a refreshing feeling that blows away the fatigue accumulated in daily life?

First, the harassment from ex-fiancés, villainesses, or former adventuring companions is the kind that builds up viewer irritation. It’s childish, underhanded, and insidious, making you think, “Do people who do things like this actually exist⁉”. But it’s precisely because there is empathy with the memory or experience of receiving such negative actions that these conventions aren’t worn out and continue to be updated.

When the protagonist, unbowed by such harassment and having gained the highest-level help, lands a counter-punch, you can’t help but strike a mental ‘Guts Pose’. The more the actions of the one getting the “zamaa (laugh)” escalate, the more you fidget, wanting to see the scene of their defeat sooner, and your expectations rise. The harsher the real world someone is struggling in, the more stress they tend to accumulate. There’s no doubt that having those murky, irritating feelings cleared away neatly by protagonists who use cheat abilities, past-life memories, and experience to slice through unpleasant existences is connected to the high popularity of isekai reincarnation works.

Endlessly, the world gives birth to many “isekai sukatto refreshing reincarnation tales”. And they will continue to be adapted into anime one after another. The endlessly enjoyable refreshment and the anticipation of new encounters with works is truly something to look forward to.
