The Legend Continues: A New Chapter for Kenichi
Get ready to jump back into the world of hard-hitting martial arts! The creator of the beloved series Shijou Saikyou no Deshi Kenichi (also known as Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple), Matsuena Shun, just dropped some thrilling news for fans everywhere.
Via a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Matsuena-sensei announced that a sequel manga is officially in the works. Titled Shijou Saikyou no Deshi Kenichi 2: Tatsujin-hen (Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple 2 – Masters Arc), the series is set to begin its publication on the Sunday Webry website. Mark your calendars for March 25, 2026, when the first chapter will go live!
A Storied History: From Prototype to Phenomenon
The journey of Kenichi Shirahama began long before he became the “History’s Strongest Disciple.” Matsuena Shun first tested the waters with a prototype manga called Tatakae! Ryouzanpaku Shijou Saikyou no Deshi, which ran in Shounen Sunday Super from 1999 to 2002.
The main event, however, was the iconic Shijou Saikyou no Deshi Kenichi serialization. It graced the pages of the weekly Shounen Sunday magazine for over a decade, from August 2002 to September 2014. With an impressive 61 volumes published by Shogakukan (wrapping up in February 2015), the series has achieved a monumental 12 million copies in print, cementing its place in martial arts manga history.
Beyond the Page: The Anime Legacy
Kenichi’s story wasn’t confined to manga panels. His journey to strength was brilliantly animated for television by TMS Entertainment. This 50-episode anime adaptation aired from Fall 2006 to Summer 2007, bringing the intense training and epic battles to a wider audience.
But that wasn’t the end of the animated action! The studio Brain’s Base later produced a series of 11 Original Video Anime (OVA) episodes. These were released bundled with special editions of the manga volumes between March 2012 and May 2014, offering fans even more content.
For international fans, the anime has seen several releases. It was originally licensed in North America by Funimation, and more recently, Discotek Media re-licensed and released the series on Blu-ray. It’s also available for streaming on Crunchyroll, making it easier than ever to experience Kenichi’s growth.
What’s It All About?
For the uninitiated, the story follows Kenichi Shirahama, a kind-hearted but perpetually bullied 15-year-old. His desire to become stronger leads him to his school’s karate club, but he ends up as nothing more than a punching bag. His fate changes when he meets the enigmatic and incredibly skilled transfer student, Miu Fuuriniji.
Miu introduces him to the Ryouzanpaku Dojo, a place inhabited by six of the world’s most eccentric—and powerful—martial arts masters. Recognizing his potential (and his sheer determination), they take him on as their disciple. The series is a thrilling ride of relentless training, formidable foes, and personal growth, all as Kenichi strives to become strong enough to protect what matters most.
