About the Legendary Manga

The source material is the adventure fantasy shoujo manga created by Shinohara Chie. It was serialized in Sho-Comi magazine from January 1995 to June 2002. Shogakukan published the story across 28 volumes, which have since been reprinted in a 16-volume paperback edition. Its popularity is undeniable, with a cumulative circulation of 20 million copies including digital editions.

The series’ quality is also award-winning, having snagged the 46th Shogakukan Manga Award in the Shoujo category back in 2000. For those who want more, Shinohara also penned three spin-off novels released under Shogakuna’s Lululu Bunko label between 2007 and 2010.

Journey Across the Globe

Sora wa Akai Kawa no Hotori has captivated readers worldwide. VIZ Media licensed the English version, releasing all 28 volumes between 2004 and 2010. They’ve recently been publishing 3-in-1 omnibus editions, with the sixth volume shipped in January 2025. The manga’s reach extends far beyond, with editions available in German, Italian, Vietnamese, and other languages.

A Glimpse Into the Story

For the uninitiated, here’s the compelling premise: Yuri, a young Japanese woman, thinks her life is on track after passing exams and sharing a first kiss. But her world turns upside down when she discovers water reacts strangely around her. Her modern life is shattered when she’s violently pulled through a puddle and transported to an ancient village in the Middle East. Captured by soldiers, she is taken to a queen’s palace as a intended human sacrifice, thrust into a dangerous and mysterious fantasy world.
