A First Look at the Legendary Artist’s Work
Who Was Takahashi Kazuki?
Takahashi Kazuki (1961–2022) was born in Tokyo. He made his debut in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1990 under the name Takahashi Kazumasa, with the one-shot manga “Toukio no Taka” published in the magazine’s Summer Special. Then, in issue #42 of 1996, he began serializing Yu-Gi-Oh! in Weekly Shonen Jump. The series has since sold over 44 million copies worldwide (including digital editions). It ran until issue #15 of 2004, delighting countless fans.
In 1999, the card game “Magic & Wizards” that appeared in Yu-Gi-Oh! was commercialized as the Yu-Gi-Oh! Official Card Game: Duel Monsters. In 2000, the TV anime adaptation Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters began airing. Even after the original series ended, sequel series continued to be produced, with the eighth installment, Yu-Gi-Oh! Go Rush!!, running until 2025.
In 2016, the theatrical film Yu-Gi-Oh! The Dark Side of Dimensions was released, with Takahashi himself handling the original story, script, character design, and serving as executive producer. He also published a special one-shot manga, DRUMP, in Weekly Shonen Jump issue #49 of 2013, and a short serialized manga, THE COMIQ, from issue #46 to #52 of 2018.
Exhibition Details: A Journey into Takahashi’s Imagination
Of course, Takahashi was not only a “manga artist” but also a “character designer,” “game creator,” and “monster designer”—a man of diverse and rare talents. Now, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Yu-Gi-Oh!—a series that has had a profound influence on both the manga and gaming worlds—his first-ever original art exhibition will be held.
Just what wellspring of imagination gave birth to the many works that still enjoy global popularity today? The exhibition will explore the origins of Takahashi’s creativity through Yu-Gi-Oh! and other works, presenting a large volume of precious hand-drawn original artwork, production materials from the concept stage, and rough illustrations of characters and monsters. Exclusive exhibition merchandise is also planned for sale. Be sure to keep your eyes on this exhibition, where you can bask in the one-of-a-kind world Takahashi built.
“Takahashi Kazuki Original Art Exhibition YU-GI-OH! ART WORKS” will be held in Tokyo in winter 2026. Note that no touring plans have been announced. More details will be released in late August 2026, so look forward to the next update!
Congratulatory Messages
Kazama Shunsuke (Voice of Mutou Yuugi)
I’m really looking forward to Takahashi-sensei’s art exhibition.
Through Yu-Gi-Oh!, he told a story where souls transcend time and come back to life.
If we continue to love his drawings and his stories,
I believe Takahashi-sensei’s soul will return to this world again and again.
I can hardly wait to experience his many works and touch his soul.
Tsuda Kenjiro (Voice of Kaiba Seto)
I once saw Takahashi Kazuki-sensei signing a shikishi board.
He didn’t just sign it—he drew an illustration too. It was like magic.
In no time, Yuugi and Kaiba came to life with such energy.
It was at a film wrap party with a little alcohol flowing, and he was drawing again and again for the anime staff,
using a marker rather than his usual pen. Even those drawings, which weren’t at 100% of his ability,
had an overwhelming presence when seen in the flesh.
I was standing beside him, genuinely amazed, and he looked shy and embarrassed.
Duelists! Now you’ll get to see his serious original artwork! Go see it!
Takahashi Kazuki is still alive there!
