Tomono Nagawa’s immensely popular heartwarming tanuki story “Omae, Tanuki ni Naranee ka?” (comic POOL / Ichijinsha) has been announced for a TV anime adaptation.
“Omae, Tanuki ni Naranee ka?” is about a mysterious young man, Kogane-maru, who suddenly appears before people. His true identity is a “bake-tanuki” (shape-shifting tanuki) who scouts humans to turn them into tanuki in order to increase the mountain’s inhabitants. Through interactions with Kogane-maru and other tanuki, people’s hardened hearts gradually soften. It’s a story of those tired of striving, who reevaluate themselves through encounters with tanuki.
The director is Jun Kamiya (Kingdom, Yaku nara Magokoro no Kappu), and animation production is by Nippon Animation (Arai-guma Rascal, Chibi Maruko-chan). They will maximize the warm exchanges between humans and tanuki and the beautiful world that are the charm of this work.
Along with the TV anime adaptation announcement, a teaser visual and promo video have been released. In the promo video, tanuki are shown running energetically through nature, with beautiful music by Minako Seki.
