Episode 9 of Mahou no Shimai Rurutto Lilie—the sixth entry in Studio Pierrot’s magical girl series—aired on May 31, marking the final stretch of the first cour. The episode, titled “Episode 09: A Dissatisfying Saturday,” shifted focus away from the idol personas and zeroed in on the real sisters Nonoyama Fuu and Nonoyama Rui.
Fans have been watching the two navigate their double lives: Fuu transforms into Konpeto Lilie, and Rui into Mashuu Ruru. Neither knows the other’s secret identity. While their magical alter egos share a warm, respectful dynamic, the real sisters have been growing apart. This episode finally brought those tensions into the open—and delivered a heartwarming resolution that had viewers cooing over the pair’s awkward but genuine bond.
A Glimpse Inside the Sisters’ Hearts
Ruru (Rui) revealed on a TV show that becoming an idol had reignited her passion for singing—a dream she had abandoned after falling ill. The spark came from watching Lilie’s debut stage. Lilie (Fuu) had no idea that Ruru was her own older sister, and the admiration was mutual. Ruru looked up to Lilie as a senior idol, using respectful language with her sister without realizing who she was really talking to.
Viewers first reacted to the reappearance of Bernard Kento, the host of Ruru’s TV appearance. Voiced by veteran Mizushima Yuu, Bernard had previously been warned for his “hell quiz” antics. Fans were relieved to see him back. Ruru’s line about becoming “a new me, little by little” also drew warm comments.
Tea, Confessions, and Cracks
Later, Lilie visited the production office and found Ruru alone. As they waited, Lilie brought tea and told Ruru not to be so formal. Fans enjoyed seeing the pair interact without the usual chaos. But the mood shifted when Lilie confessed: “There’s someone precious to me since childhood. I wanted to make them smile, and somehow it all got so big…”
Ruru replied, “If I hadn’t met you, I probably wouldn’t have changed at all. You opened a door for me.” Viewers speculated about the root of Rui’s past trauma, noting the distance between the sisters despite their kindness.
Homecoming and a Clash
When Fuu returned home, she found Rui watching her show—a rarity. Fuu timidly asked, “Are you a fan of Lilie?” Rui’s shy admission delighted fans. But the sweetness soured when Fuu said she wanted to hear Rui sing again and mentioned Lilie. Rui retorted, “I can’t sing like that.” Fuu, knowing Lilie better than anyone, insisted Rui was better, but Rui accused Fuu of not understanding.
Alone, both regretted the argument. Fans noted the irony: as idols they get along, as sisters they clash.
Magic Brings Them Together
Still at odds, both sisters unconsciously used magic to clear their restless feelings. Rui wished to “find something sparkling,” Fuu wished for the gloom to fly away. Unlike the previous episode’s chaotic magic overwriting, this time the spells gently guided them to a chance meeting as Lilie and Ruru in a crowd.
Unaware they were siblings, Lilie and Ruru listened to each other’s troubles. Rui finally realized, “I was angry at myself back then.” After returning home, she apologized to Fuu, and the sisters reconciled.
Viewers praised the episode for showing that the sisters can only be their true selves when transformed. Comments like “This sister pair is wonderfully awkward” and “What a cute pair of sisters” flooded social media. The next episode, titled “Episode 08: Invited, to Felix Star” (note the numbering), will air next week.
