Mononoke Gets New Anime Project

Production company Twin Engine announced on Sunday that a new project in the Mononoke anime series is in production.

Actor Araki Hirofumi (Tennis no Oujisama), who played the Medicine Seller in the most recent Mononoke stage play, will voice a new Medicine Seller named Ken no Tsurugi.

The original character designer of the trilogy, Nagata Kitsuneko, returns for the new project.

Produced by Toei Animation, Mononoke is a spin-off of the 2006 anthology Ayakashi: Japanese Classic Horror (Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales). The original series aired 12 episodes in Summer 2007. Crunchyroll streamed the anime with subtitles and dubs in multiple languages.

The trilogy movies were produced by EOTA. The first movie, Mononoke Movie 1: Karakasa (Mononoke the Movie: Phantom in the Rain), premiered in Japanese theatres in July 2024. The second movie, subtitled Dai ni Shou – Hinezumi (Chapter II – Fire Rat), released in March 2025. The final movie in the trilogy, Mononoke Movie 3: Hebigami (Mononoke the Movie: Chapter III – Snake God), opened in theaters on May 29.

A project trailer has been released.
