Animation creator Yamashita Seigo, known for his striking opening sequences in hit series such as Jujutsu Kaisen 1st Season, Chainsaw Man, and Urusei Yatsura, makes his feature-length directorial debut with this original anime. Super Kaguya Hime! is currently streaming worldwide exclusively on Netflix as a film.

This “music animation project” features songs from an impressive lineup of Vocaloid producers: ryo (supercell), kz (livetune), 40mP, HoneyWorks, Aqu3ra, and yuigot. Yamashita’s signature high-sense, emotional visuals that complement the story, combined with dynamic 3D camera work, bring to life the virtual space “Tsukuyomi” and the bonds of girls connected through song. The animation is produced by Studio Colorido (known for Penguin Highway, A Whisker Away) and Studio Chromat, led by director Yamashita Seigo, marking the studio’s first work.

Recently, during the graduation stage greeting held to mark the end of the initial run, the revival screening in a special format (along with a re-release of the standard version) was announced and generated much buzz. Now, ahead of the September 18 start, the special format version preview has been released.

The video begins with the narration “Once upon a time, but not really…” and depicts the meeting between the mysterious girl from the moon, Kaguya, and the overworked high school student Sakayori Iroha, who is busy with studies and part-time jobs. Kaguya laments that the classic Taketori Monogatari (The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter) has a bad ending and declares, “I’ll take you all the way to a happy ending! Iroha, come with me!” Kaguya starts livestreaming in the virtual space Tsukuyomi, and with Iroha’s help, she meets the manager of Tsukuyomi, Tsukimi Yachiyo, performs live, battles rivals, and rapidly grows into a popular streamer. Just when things seem to be going smoothly toward a happy ending, Kaguya tells Iroha, “The moon will come for me on the next full moon.” Confused by the sudden farewell, Iroha and her friends try to stop Kaguya from leaving. “I wanted to sing with you more, Iroha,” says Kaguya, as their memories and feelings intertwine. Iroha resolves, “I won’t let this become a bad ending!” The preview ends with Iroha saying, “This story still has more to come,” followed by a meaningful scene where a teary-eyed Yachiyo hums the song “Reply” from the film, saying, “Let’s make this moment the best party.” The trailer leaves viewers eager to see whether Kaguya and Iroha can overturn the impending bad ending and reach a true happy ending.

Furthermore, the Mubichike card-type pre-sale tickets (3 types) will go on sale from August 7 (Friday). The newly drawn illustrations feature Kaguya, Sakayori Iroha, and Tsukimi Yachiyo in Japanese-style “Fanatic Omatsuri Girl” costumes, striking dynamic poses full of summer energy. When the three cards are lined up side by side, they form a complete group visual, making them highly collectible. The purchase bonus is a “Solo Visual Clear Poster” (3 types) featuring the same designs. Fans can get these refreshing clear posters of Kaguya and the others.
