The world of Ghost in the Shell meets traditional Japanese craftsmanship in a new collaboration: a mechanical wristwatch inspired by the beloved Fuchikoma, crafted using the ancient art of raden (mother-of-pearl inlay). The watch is set to release on July 31, 2026.
A Legacy of Cyberpunk
Since Shirow Masamune’s original manga debuted in Young Magazine Extra Edition Pirate Edition (Kodansha) in 1989, the Ghost in the Shell franchise has grown into a global cyberpunk phenomenon. From Oshii Mamoru’s 1995 film Ghost in the Shell to numerous anime adaptations and a Hollywood live-action film, the series has captivated audiences worldwide.
A new TV anime season, Ghost in the Shell THE GHOST IN THE SHELL, is set to begin in 2027. Produced by Science SARU, the series features Sakamoto Maaya as Kusanagi Motoko, Yamaji Kazuhiro as Aramaki Daisuke, Yasumoto Hiroki as Batou, Nakamura Yuuichi as Togusa, Goto Kosuke as Ishikawa, Nara Toru as Saito, Ooi Maria as Operator, and Kaneda Tomoko as Fuchikoma.
Fuchikoma in Fine Detail
The watch, officially named the “Ghost in the Shell THE GHOST IN THE SHELL” S-MEISTER Mechanical Watch Fuchikoma Model, is a made-in-Japan timepiece that combines automatic movement with the delicate artistry of raden. Each dial is hand-finished by skilled artisans, ensuring that no two watches are exactly alike.
The design takes direct inspiration from the Fuchikoma’s front view. The wheels, arms, and manipulators are translated into watch components. The concept of “Shell” (貝) from the title ties into the cyborg body theme, leading to the use of mother-of-pearl’s mysterious shimmer.
The indices are shaped like the Fuchikoma’s wheels.
The hands are designed to resemble the Fuchikoma’s arms.
The see-through case back features the Ghost in the Shell THE GHOST IN THE SHELL logo.
