‘Super no Ura de Yani Suu Futari’ is a manga by Jinushi that began serialization on X (formerly Twitter) on March 9, 2022. The first chapter garnered over 280,000 likes, and it is currently serialized in Square Enix’s Monthly Big Gangan. The story follows 45-year-old worn-out salaryman Sasaki and 24-year-old supermarket employee Tayama, who bond over cigarettes behind the supermarket. The TV anime started airing on July 9, 2026, directed by Rito Suzuki and Aoi Mori, with animation production by Asahi Production. The cast includes Takuya Sato as Sasaki and Kisei Hoshi as Yamada/Tayama.
The following contains spoilers for episode 4. Proceed with caution.
Sasaki’s Smartphone Struggles
In the office, Sasaki is reading a newspaper when his colleague Suzuki tells him he looks old with reading glasses. Sasaki pulls out a flip phone, saying it’s not broken yet, prompting reactions like ‘He uses a flip phone? ww’ and ‘That’s so in character for Sasaki w’. Soon after, his phone breaks, forcing him to get a smartphone. He struggles even to return to the home screen and accidentally takes a selfie with the front camera on the train, leading to comments like ‘He’s too much of an old man w’ and ‘One wrong move and he’d get arrested’.
Tayama helps him set up digital newspapers, but when Sasaki asks to enlarge the text, Tayama seems reluctant because she likes his reading glasses. She adjusts his glasses and says ‘Don’t stop wearing those’, which fans loved: ‘I want Tayama to adjust my glasses’ and ‘Thank you for making Sasaki wear glasses’.

Later, Yamada is shown getting ready for work, and fans noted her different hairstyle. She secretly looks at a photo of Sasaki she took (or rather, sneakily took) with a happy expression.
Fortune-Telling Follies
Another day, Suzuki tells Sasaki about a fortune-telling method based on cigarette brands. Sasaki, being pure, believes it and tells Tayama. They try it, and the results are absurd: Sasaki is ‘masochistic’ and Tayama has ‘strong sexual desires’. Fans laughed: ‘The dual personality thing is spot on w’ and ‘It’s like S&M w’.

Tayama says ‘You did it for my sake, right?’ and Sasaki replies ‘The dual personality part might be true’ – but he means it as ‘You’re cool but kind!’ Fans shouted ‘He’s so dense ww’.
The next day, the store manager senses something happened between them. The supermarket BGM is the OP theme ‘Ichijiku Kemuri’ arranged differently, which fans noticed.

Half-Sleeve Excitement
Summer arrives, and Sasaki goes to the supermarket in the evening, seeing Yamada in a half-sleeve shirt for the first time. He gets so excited he leaves without buying anything. Fans: ‘Getting excited over half-sleeves? w’ and ‘A 45-year-old excited by half-sleeves… w’.

Yamada sees him and confronts him. She tries to tease him by lifting her shirt to show her belly, but Sasaki worries she’ll catch a cold. Fans were both excited and amused: ‘Ewwww!!!’ and ‘Sexy!’ but also ‘Don’t stop eating ramen, please’.

The episode ends with Yamada lying down, saying she’ll cut back on ramen, and fans begging her not to.

The fourth episode was filled with comedic exchanges that kept viewers laughing. The relationship between Sasaki and Tayama continues to provide weekly comfort. The fifth episode, titled ‘Super no Ura de Kakeru Futari’, is scheduled to air on August 6, 2026.
