Kusuriya no Hitorigoto: Maomao and Jinshi AR Photo Spots Debut Across Ibaraki This Summer

Fans of Kusuriya no Hitorigoto can now snap photos with Maomao and Jinshi at scenic locations across Ibaraki Prefecture. A special AR photo spot campaign, titled “Maomao and Jinshi Summer Tour,” will run from August 8 to September 30, 2026.

About the Series

Kusuriya no Hitorigoto is a popular palace mystery entertainment series set in the imperial court, following the young poison taster Maomao as she solves various difficult cases. The series has surpassed 45 million copies in cumulative circulation, and its compelling heroine, intricate mysteries, and exotic world-building have earned it a wide fan base across generations.

After the second TV anime season ended in July 2025, a third season and a theatrical film were announced. The third season is scheduled to air in two consecutive cours starting October 2026, with the film set for release in December of the same year.

How the AR Photo Spots Work

At each participating location, a panel with a limited-edition QR code will be installed. By scanning the code with a smartphone, an original AR photo frame featuring newly drawn chibi versions of Maomao and Jinshi will appear, allowing visitors to take commemorative photos together with the characters. The frames are designed to reflect the unique characteristics of each spot and region.

Once acquired, the AR photo frame can be reused as many times as desired within the participating municipalities, so visitors can enjoy taking photos against various backdrops while exploring the area.

Four Summer Photo Spots

Hitachiota: Ryujin Suspension Bridge

At the Ryujin Suspension Bridge in Hitachiota City, one of the longest of its kind in Japan, visitors can enjoy a powerful photo with Jinshi against the majestic valley and nature. The QR code is available at Suifu Bussan Center.

Chikusei: Akeno Himawari no Sato

In Chikusei City, the Akeno Himawari no Sato field typically sees about one million double-flowered sunflowers blooming from late August to early September. With Mount Tsukuba in the background, this spot offers a bright, summer-perfect photo opportunity. The QR code is located at Michi-no-Eki Grand Terrace Chikusei.

Ami: Ami Premium Outlets

From the Ami Premium Outlets in Ami Town, visitors can enjoy a view of the Ushiku Daibutsu, the world’s tallest bronze Buddha statue. While shopping, they can also create memories with Maomao. The QR code is placed at the Ami Tourist Products Center “ami colle!” inside the outlet.

Oarai: Oarai Sun Beach

Oarai Sun Beach, also known as “Reflection Beach,” is famous for its mirror-like reflection of the sea on the sand during the ebb tide. With the summer sky and blue sea as a backdrop, visitors can capture a refreshing and fantastical shot. The QR code is available at the Oarai Tourist Information Center “Umi Machi Terrace.”

SNS Campaign

During the event period, an SNS campaign will be held on the official “Kanko Ibaraki” X account. Participants who post photos taken with the AR photo frame using the hashtag #猫猫壬氏と夏巡り will be entered into a drawing for 30 winners to receive a limited-edition seasonal tourism poster (B2 size, non-sale item) featuring the “Summer” version.

Additional Events

  • Hitachiota: Ryujin Suspension Bridge illumination every Saturday from sunset to 8:00 PM.
  • Chikusei: Akeno Himawari Festival 2026, August 26–30.
  • Oarai: Oarai Sun Beach swimming season runs July 18–August 16. Swimming outside this period is dangerous and should be avoided.

Campaign Details

The event runs from August 8 to September 30, 2026. Participation is free, but communication fees are the responsibility of the user. QR code scanning is only available during each facility’s business hours, so visitors are advised to check hours in advance.

This campaign is the first in a year-long initiative to showcase the seasonal charms of Ibaraki Prefecture. Future editions are planned for autumn, winter, and spring, each featuring unique landscapes and tourist spots.
