Super no Ura de Yani Suu Futari Episode 6: Fans Moved by Sasaki and Tayama’s Hidden Past

TV anime Super no Ura de Yani Suu Futari aired its sixth episode, “The Smell Left Behind the Supermarket,” on August 13, 2026. The episode delivered an emotional mix of comedy and heartfelt moments, leaving viewers on social media exclaiming that it felt like a finale and praising it as a “god episode.”

The anime is based on the manga by Jinushi, which began serialization on X on March 9, 2022. The first chapter earned over 280,000 likes, and the series is currently running in Square Enix’s Monthly Big Gangan. The story follows 45-year-old salaryman Sasaki and 24-year-old supermarket employee Tayama (also known as Yamada), who bond over cigarettes at the back entrance of a supermarket.

Health Checkup Comedy Draws Laughs

The episode opens with Sasaki and Suzuki discussing their upcoming health checkups. Suzuki proudly shows off his wife’s healthy bento, but fans quickly pointed out that his three-tier bento might be too much, and that he’s not getting enough protein. Sasaki, meanwhile, buys non-alcoholic beer to prepare, but viewers joked that sugar content remains the same and that he should also consider quitting smoking.

It’s also revealed that Sasaki’s doctor has always told him to gain weight, while Tayama looks unhappy about having to cut back on ramen. Social media had a field day with the health-related banter.

When Sasaki receives his results, he’s devastated to learn that his lungs require further tests and treatment. Tearfully admitting that cigarettes really are bad for you, he worries Yamada, who tells the store manager that if Sasaki quits smoking, he’ll have no reason to come to the back of the supermarket. The store manager suggests that Yamada should reveal that he and Tayama are the same person.

Later, Tayama invites Sasaki to the back alley for what seems like a final visit. Sasaki, speaking in a faint voice, thanks Tayama for everything, prompting fans to wonder if this was the finale or if Sasaki was about to disappear. Just as Tayama is about to confess the truth, a phone call reveals that Sasaki’s diagnosis was a mistake. The two are relieved, but viewers couldn’t help but joke about the absurdity of a misdiagnosis and urged Sasaki to quit smoking anyway.

Yamada’s Past and a Surprising Hero

The second half of the episode dives into Yamada’s past. Eight years ago, Yamada was a part-time worker at the supermarket, and the store manager (then a chief) struggled to teach him how to control his facial expressions. Yamada’s awkward customer service attracted a persistent complainer, who harassed him aggressively. Viewers were outraged, calling it customer harassment and demanding arrest.

Just as the situation escalates, a man steps in and tells the complainer to be quiet. That man turns out to be Sasaki. Fans were thrilled to see Sasaki as the unexpected savior.

Yamada later goes to the smoking area (now gone) where Sasaki is having a cigarette, and thanks him. Sasaki says, “You’re always so earnest,” which makes Yamada burst into tears. Viewers sent words of encouragement to Yamada, praising his hard work.

Eight years later, Yamada recalls this incident, but the store manager doesn’t remember it at all. And crucially, Yamada still doesn’t realize that the man who saved him was Sasaki. Fans were shocked that neither of them recognized each other, and the episode ended on that surprising note.
