The 79th episode of the summer anime Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu 4th season, titled “Tachinasai” (Stand Up), aired on August 19, 2026. The episode not only unmasked the culprit behind Subaru’s mysterious amnesia but also delivered an emotional reunion that had viewers in tears.

Warning: The following contains major spoilers for Episode 79. Proceed with caution.

Waiting for This Moment

Subaru’s plan to read Reid Astrea’s Book of the Dead in search of a clue to defeat the second trial earns a nod from Emilia, who calls it a “sly trick” typical of him. When Subaru replies with a distinctly old-fashioned phrase, “Nobody says that these days,” Emilia’s face lights up—she finally recognizes the Subaru she knows, even without his memories.

Fans on X cheered the moment: “That Subaru-like phrase made Emilia so happy!” “Her smile is adorable when she hears his usual comeback.”

Subaru then turns to Julius, who is still shaken by his defeat at Reid’s hands and by being forgotten. Subaru tells him, “That is that, and this is this.” Winning against Reid takes priority now. What Julius lacks isn’t courage—it’s fighting spirit, the absolute will to not lose. Subaru sees this and entrusts Julius with the entire battle against Reid.

Viewers were moved by the trust between the two: “That’s a legendary line: ‘What you lack isn’t courage, it’s fighting spirit.'” “Even with different memories, Subaru is still Subaru—amazing!” “Subaru entrusting Reid to Julius is so emotional.”

Heading to the library, Meili finds Reid’s Book of the Dead, but instead of Reid’s memories, Subaru confronts an unexpected enemy: Louis Arneb, the Sin Archbishop of Gluttony, and the third of the three siblings following Ley Batenkaitos and Roy Alphard. It becomes clear that Subaru had attempted a similar plan before and had his memories devoured right here.

The sudden appearance of this sinister, child-like foe sent tension through the timeline. Fans noted, “Ah, so Gluttony is why Subaru lost his memories.” “So this girl was the one who stole his memories.”

In a space called the “Memory Corridor,” Louis targets Subaru’s memories again, just like that night. She relentlessly exposes his hidden truths, chipping away at his resolve. Her goal is to fully separate Subaru’s pre-amnesia and post-amnesia personas before consuming them, exploiting the rule that she can only take memories from a person once.

The intensity of her verbal assault drew strong reactions: “She’s really going in for the kill!” “This is Kohara Konomi’s show!” “That’s brutal.” Subaru’s face darkens as the pressure mounts.

Suddenly, a horde of mysterious beasts swarms the tower, forcing Shaula and the others into battle. Overwhelmed by numbers, the creatures breach the interior, and Louis’s “brother” also appears, escalating the chaos. Meanwhile, Subaru faces an impossible choice.

If he regains his memories, they would overwrite his current self, meaning either the pre-amnesia Subaru or the post-amnesia Subaru would disappear. Having already formed bonds with Emilia and the others as the amnesiac Subaru, losing his current self would be like death. This is exactly Louis’s trap—forcing Subaru to reject his former self.

But salvation arrives in the form of footsteps and a familiar, nostalgic smile.

“Why do you have to choose only one? …Stand up!”

It’s Rem—a figure not present in Subaru’s current memories. She appears as a fragment of “unneeded memories” Louis discarded after eating Subaru’s past. Yet she is undeniably there, urging him to accept all of himself.

“Stand up! Stand, stand, stand—stand up!!”

Fans erupted: “Rem?!” “Finally, Rem is back!” “It’s been years since we heard her voice—I’m crying.” The emotional weight of Inori Minase’s performance left many in tears.

When asked why Subaru could save everyone and himself, Rem answers with the same gentle expression she wore long ago:

“Subaru-kun is Rem’s hero.”

Viewers echoed the sentiment: “This is too much! Thank you, Re:Zero!” “Hearing ‘Subaru-kun is Rem’s hero’ again is everything.” The episode was hailed as a “god episode” across social media.

Standing anew, Subaru rejects Louis’s temptation and rejoins the chaotic battlefield. But Louis still holds hidden cards, and this grudge is far from over.

“One of the greatest scenes in Re:Zero history—Minase Inori’s acting is incredible!” “The reunion with Rem after six years is perfection.” “This was arguably the most intense 30 minutes of Re:Zero yet.”

The next episode airs on August 26.
