Netflix has announced that its upcoming animated film Ririsu to Shinderera no Otogi no Oukoku will be exclusively available worldwide starting Friday, November 20. A teaser trailer and teaser art have just been unveiled.
A New Cinderella Story from the Studio of ‘KPOP Girls! Demon Hunters’
The film comes from the studio behind the Academy Award and Golden Globe-winning phenomenon KPOP Girls! Demon Hunters. It reimagines the timeless fairy tale “Cinderella” from a fresh perspective.
This time, Lilith — typically portrayed as Cinderella’s “wicked stepsister” — unexpectedly teams up with Cinderella herself. Together, they break out of the “beautiful story” and embark on an unconventional, exciting adventure. The teaser trailer showcases carriage chases, terrifying monsters, and a whole lot of action, offering a glimpse of a Cinderella story like no other.
The Familiar Tale and Its Hidden Side
Most people know the classic story: a kind Cinderella, mistreated by her stepmother and stepsisters, attends a ball thanks to a fairy godmother and falls in love with the prince. When the magic fades at midnight, she flees, leaving behind a glass slipper. The prince finds her, and they live happily ever after.
But that beautiful happy ending is not the only story.
Ririsu to Shinderera no Otogi no Oukoku
One of this story’s main characters is Lilith, Cinderella’s sister. She is typically seen as the spiteful sibling who bullies Cinderella — but in reality, she envies her. That envy grows so strong that she steals a magic wand to cast spells of her own.
In the newly released footage, Lilith interrupts the opening narration that paints her in a bad light, turning directly to the audience to confidently tell her version of “Cinderella.” As the tale unfolds with all its essential elements — the prince, the glass slipper, the ball — a mysterious villainess who rules the kingdom throws everything into chaos.
To restore order, Lilith and Cinderella dash out of the castle and plunge into an adventure unlike anything they’ve experienced. The trailer shows them speeding in a carriage, escaping monstrous creatures, and even hinting at a possible romance with a troll — an unpredictable whirlwind of events.
Directors and Their Vision
The film is directed by Alice Tsu and John Ripa, the latter known for Raya and the Last Dragon (original Japanese title: 『ラーヤと龍の王国』). Tsu shared her confidence in the project: “There isn’t just one Cinderella story — people want different things from it. We were able to incorporate iconic moments, add twists, and tell it from multiple perspectives.”
The supposedly wicked stepsister throws herself into action for the sake of the kingdom, confronting crises while speaking her true mind — this is the “other” Cinderella tale. Will Lilith and Cinderella manage to find their own happy ending?
