Suica no Penguin is getting a new “mascot bag” from Kinokuniya, and the retailer describes it as its last Suica no Penguin goods release. The item is planned to go on sale in late October 2026.
Suica no Penguin came from Antarctica to Tokyo. Its favorite food is fish sausage, and it is modeled on the Adelie penguin, which actually lives in Antarctica. Because it is meant to be an “IC card alter ego” for each person, the character has no name. It is a character that accompanies people when they go out with a Suica card or penguin goods.
Since 2001, Suica no Penguin has been loved alongside the birth of Suica. However, it has been decided that at the end of fiscal 2026, in March 2027, it will “fly to a new place.” On September 8, following this, JR East began a vote for a new character design, and three final candidate characters were revealed. The Suica no Penguin has been drawing renewed attention as a result.
Ahead of release, the appearance of the Suica no Penguin “mascot bag” has been revealed. The mascot bag is designed as an item that lets people take the familiar Suica no Penguin—familiar from daily travel and shopping—anywhere. It comes with a carabiner, so it can be attached to a bag and carried around.
The design also features Suica no Penguin carrying a Kinokuniya eco bag over its shoulder. In addition, the Kinokuniya eco bag can be taken out from the mascot’s back.
From neighborhood shopping to holiday outings, the mascot bag can be enjoyed in a variety of situations. According to Kinokuniya, this product will be the last Suica no Penguin goods the company releases.
