Shirodaira Kyou’s acclaimed manga Vampire Juujikai is officially getting a TV anime adaptation in 2027. The announcement marks a long-awaited return for the series, which began serialization in 2003 and has waited 24 years since its debut for an anime adaptation.

Shirodaira Kyou is a popular author active in both novels and manga, with works including Kyokou Suiri, Zetsuen no Tempest, and Spiral: Suiri no Kizuna. Kyokou Suiri: Koujin Nanase won the 12th Honkaku Mystery Award in the novel category, earning high praise for precise foreshadowing and meticulous mystery construction.

The original Vampire Juujikai ran in Gekkan Shounen Gangan (Square Enix) starting in 2003. Its high level of completion created a passionate fanbase, and after 24 years since serialization began, the anime adaptation will finally arrive in 2027.

Set in a world where vampires, humans, and dhampirs—the mixed-race offspring of both—coexist, the story follows Rose Red Strauss, the last king of the "Night Country" and the "Red Rose Vampire King." For a thousand years, he has fought a solitary battle to reclaim the queen sealed away by humans. When a new threat appears in the world, truths that had never been revealed begin to unravel in a millennium-spanning tale of love and revenge.

Animation production is handled by Zero-G × Liber. The director and series composition is Mankyuu, known for Koori Zokusei Danshi to Cool na Douryou Joshi and Koori no Jouheki. Character design is by jimao, who worked on prop design for Kikaijikake no Marie and Guranburu Season 2 & 3. Music is by Evan Call, whose credits include Violet Evergarden and Sousou no Frieren. The project brings together a decorated staff.

Two main cast members have also been announced. Uchida Yuuma will play protagonist Rose Red Strauss, and Shimada Aino will play Bridget Irving Frostheart, the leader of the dhampirs.

The teaser PV released today depicts a tense scene in which Strauss resolves to abandon his country to reclaim the queen, while Bridget tries to stop him. The dialogue “If you want to kill me, you had better find a hell greater than mine” and a series of unsettling words in the on-screen text suggest the sweeping, fierce developments of the thousand-year story.

The teaser visual released at the same time shows Strauss looming with overwhelming presence against a red moon, while Bridget faces him with a great sword in hand. Their strained confrontation conveys the harsh fate of the bloodline and the weighty worldview.

An official anime website and official social media accounts on X and Instagram also opened on the same day. Character visuals and further details are available, so fans should check them out.

Why did the "supreme king" become an enemy to all? The thousand-year tale of love and revenge, TV anime Vampire Juujikai, is set to air in 2027.

Cast Comments

Uchida Yuuma as Rose Red Strauss

"I will be playing Rose Red Strauss. Strauss is a very strong and quiet person. However, I feel that each of his words and actions carries what he has shouldered over a long time and his own thoughts. As the story progresses, I believe the way people see Strauss will surely change. I want to perform while firmly grasping his heart—what he feels and what he continues to fight for. Please look forward to Vampire Juujikai!"

Shimada Aino as Bridget Irving Frostheart

"I am Shimada Aino, and I will be playing Bridget Irving Frostheart. She is a dhampir, half vampire and half human, and as the leader of the dhampirs, Bridget is a proud woman who combines strength and nobility. Yet the sadness that sometimes appears in her eyes makes me wonder what sights she has seen over the long years she has walked. Please enjoy the story woven from the characters’ intricate relationships and feelings!"
