A new collaboration between Koukaku Kidoutai THE GHOST IN THE SHELL and American city bag brand T・S・O・G has produced an all-waterproof genuine leather city backpack. Pre-orders will begin at 17:00 on Thursday, October 8, 2026, on the TSOG official online store.
Koukaku Kidoutai is a cyberpunk SF masterpiece set in a near future where information networks and cyborg technology are highly advanced, and people are connected to cyberbrains. It depicts a special unit led by full-body cyborg Kusanagi Motoko as they confront cybercrime. Shirow Masamune first published the original manga in 1989 in Young Magazine Zoukan Kaizokuban. Since then, the franchise has expanded through animation, including Oshii Mamoru’s film GHOST IN THE SHELL / Koukaku Kidoutai, and a Hollywood live-action film, continuing to surprise and stimulate audiences around the world. The latest TV anime, Koukaku Kidoutai THE GHOST IN THE SHELL, finished airing its final episode on September 8, 2026, and is streaming sequentially on Prime Video and other distribution services.
The collaboration backpack reimagines the ‘boundary between humans and technology’ that Koukaku Kidoutai has continued to depict, along with symbolic elements such as cyberbrains and network connections, as ‘equipment’ for modern daily life.
Design Details
The backpack’s design translates recurring visual motifs from the series into functional details.
The back design is inspired by an in-story visual in which multiple cables are connected to Kusanagi Motoko’s body. The lines lead to the work’s logo at the center.
The shape of the zipper pulls draws from the multiple wires that connect the body to the outside, a motif repeatedly depicted in Koukaku Kidoutai. The curves and intersecting lines are reconstructed as three metal zipper pulls.
Focusing on GHOST and CYBERBRAIN, which symbolize Koukaku Kidoutai, the relationship between humans and cyberbrains is rebuilt as a UI design. The original UI design places GHOST in the center, surrounded by CYBERBRAIN.
The color is inspired by Kusanagi Motoko’s blue-toned hair in this work. Blue-purple stitching is placed only on part of the front, adding a subtle color that evokes the series while maintaining the black-based look.
From the key visual, the silhouettes of Kusanagi Motoko and Fuchikoma are extracted. They appear as a removable leather tag, expressed with silver foil stamping on black leather.
Functionality and Storage
Functionality is another highlight. The backpack uses a waterproofing technology that makes the leather difficult to penetrate with water, overturning the common belief that genuine leather is weak against water.
The front storage pockets are designed for easy organization. They include a zipper pocket and a multi-pocket for separating key cases, planners, and small items, as well as a pen holder.
The PC pocket can hold a PC up to 15 inches. A cushioned pocket absorbs impact and protects your important PC.
The front pockets are designed to be used according to purpose. The zipper pocket can hold a tablet or other items you use while moving.
The front pocket, which allows quick access, is convenient for frequently used small items such as a smartphone, wireless earphones, or a pass case. The larger back pocket can neatly store items you want to keep separate from the main compartment, such as a folding umbrella.
The backpack has a carry-on specification that can be fixed to a suitcase. The back is equipped with a nylon strap, allowing stable carrying during business trips or travel.
All products are delivered in a dedicated storage bag with the Koukaku Kidoutai × T・S・O・G logo. The bag protects the backpack from dirt, moisture, and UV rays during storage.
The collaboration backpack reconstructs the phrase ‘Wired bodies. Networked ghosts.’—a phrase symbolic of the Koukaku Kidoutai worldview—into details such as stitching and pulls. It is a special item born as ‘equipment’ that fits into everyday city life.
