A new chapter in the Naruto franchise is on the way. During the Naruto: What’s Next? panel at New York Comic Con 2026 on Saturday, it was announced that Kishimoto Masashi will launch a new manga titled Naruto: Shadow Rising. A super teaser was also revealed for the project.
The manga is part of Project Rasengan, a three-year timeline of upcoming releases for the franchise. Announced projects so far include a crossover anime series, a mobile game, and a card game. More details about Naruto: Shadow Rising will be revealed at Jump Festa 2027.
Kishimoto Masashi’s Original Naruto Run
Kishimoto Masashi serialized Naruto in Weekly Shounen Jump from September 1999 to November 2014. Shueisha published the 72nd and final volume in February 2015. The manga has a cumulative 250 million copies of its volumes in circulation.
Boruto Manga History
Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, the sequel manga, was written by Kodachi Ukyou with illustrations by Ikemoto Mikio. It began serializing in Weekly Shounen Jump in May 2016, with Kishimoto Masashi serving as supervisor. The manga moved to V-Jump in 2019 before Kishimoto took over the story in November 2020. The first part concluded in April 2023, with Shueisha publishing the 20th volume in June 2023.
The second part, Boruto: Two Blue Vortex, launched in August 2023, with Kishimoto and Ikemoto serving as writer and illustrator, respectively. Shueisha released the ninth volume on October 2.
Anime Adaptations
The original Naruto television anime aired for 220 episodes from October 2002 to February 2007. Naruto: Shippuuden followed with 500 episodes from February 2007 to March 2017.
The Boruto sequel manga was adapted into a 293-episode television anime that aired between April 2017 and March 2023. Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Part 2 is currently in production.
English Release
VIZ Media licensed the original manga in English in November 2002 and released the 72nd volume in February 2015. The company licensed the Boruto: Naruto Next Generations manga sequel in September 2016. The second part’s sixth volume went on sale on October 2, with the seventh volume planned for a March 2, 2027 release.
