Smash Hit! “Ginga Tokkyuu Mirukii☆ Sabuuei” Movie Ranks 4th in Weekend Box Office

The currently screening film “Ginga Tokkyuu Mirukii☆ Sabuuei Kakueki Teishajou Yukee” (which can be translated as “Galaxy Express Milky☆ Subway: All-Stops Theater Bound”) has recorded an impressive 109,531 attendees and 151,284,840 yen in box office revenue over its opening weekend (February 6th-8th), according to a report by the Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan.

This film is a powered-up version of the 12-episode short anime series “Ginga Tokkyuu Mirukii☆ Sabuuei,” reconstituted for the big screen with the addition of new scenes.

Despite opening on a weekday, February 6th saw consecutive sold-out showings. The momentum only increased over the weekend, with screenings quickly reaching capacity. The film smashed expectations by ranking 4th in the weekend attendance rankings despite opening in only 73 theaters. Its attendance figures are the highest for any new film released in under 100 theaters in the past year.

In response to this massive reaction, a special “Hassei Yoshi, Shuppatsu Shinkou Joueii” (literally “Shouting Allowed, Full Speed Ahead Screening”) has been scheduled for Saturday, February 14th.

Cast & Crew Stage Greeting Highlights

On February 7th, a stage greeting event was held to thank fans for their support. The event featured Terasawa Momoka (Chiharu), Komatsu Mikako (Ryouko), Ono Kenshou (Asami), Robert Waterman (Haga), and director Kameyama Youhei.

The event kicked off with a surprise appearance by the mascot “Poppy-kun” to the still-energized audience fresh from a screening. Director Kameyama expressed relief, saying, “I’m glad we managed to complete it.” Ono Kenshou and Robert Waterman, who played new characters introduced in the movie, reflected on their unique recording experience.

Ono shared, “Usually, recording involves matching pre-existing footage, but for this project, we watched the video for a test run, and then for the actual take, they’d say ‘Okay, go for it!’ without showing the visuals. It was fun being able to perform with my own timing and pacing.”

Robert Waterman added with a laugh, “I was just talking with a friend about going to a MiruSubu event when I got the role, which made things a bit awkward! I got to do a lot of back-and-forth dialogue; it was a truly happy project to act in.”

When talk turned to favorite characters, Terasawa Momoka gushed, “I love Ryouko-san; I like her even more now! I think this movie will grow her fanbase even more! She usually seems listless, but seeing how passionately she works behind the scenes made me happy. Her arguments with Haga-san are the best—I can enjoy them over and over!” This prompted Komatsu and Robert to playfully start bickering on stage, earning cheers and applause from the crowd.

Komatsu Mikako, in turn, revealed her favorite: “I like Asami. Ono Kenshou-kun’s ad-libs make him stand out even more, and his modern, dry, and cool side gives me shivers. I want to dig deeper into his character.” Director Kameyama then shared a behind-the-scenes regret: “When trying to depict Asami’s inner self, I should have properly conveyed it through visual expression, but I used the lack of production time as an excuse and made him say it in dialogue… I had him deliver a pretty direct line… (wry smile).”

Ono Kenshou chose “‘Kawasaki Boy’ (Kanata). He’s really adorable and cute, wearing a jacket that says ‘Kawasaki’ on the back and, if you look closely, ‘Chofu’ on the rear. He’s always getting paralyzed by a Taser gun—it’s relatable.” Robert Waterman focused on the details: “I watched it in the theater yesterday, and on the big screen, you can see every little thing. I love the entire set—how Akane’s long coat sways like a train, the crushed Poppy-kun sticking out, the beer signs.”

Hopes for the Future & A Special Screening

To close the event, Robert Waterman expressed gratitude: “Thanks to everyone’s love, the movie was made and I got to be in it. I hope that receiving even more love through this film might lead to something else in the future, so please continue your support! Thank you!”

Ono Kenshou shared his wish: “From my perspective, I’d love to see Ryouko-san going to a mixer and having a blast!” A slightly embarrassed Komatsu Mikako added, “If Ryouko were to go to a mixer, I imagine Asami—who absolutely shouldn’t be there—would just be there, creating that super awkward vibe! I’d love to see that story!”

Terasawa Momoka, combining heartfelt excitement with a character-perfect daydream, said, “As a fan, I want to go to the theater many times, but first, I promised to go with Nagase Anna-chan (who plays Makina), so I’ll live diligently looking forward to that day!” She then hesitantly added, “I should… probably say something too…(laughs). In that mixer scenario with Asami-san and Ryouko-san, what if Chiharu just happened to come to that restaurant, contacted Makina, and was like ‘OMG this is so awkward and hilarious’?”
