Kyoto Animation has announced an anime film adaptation of John Tarachine‘s manga Umi ga Hashiru End Roll (The Credits Roll Into the Sea). The movie is scheduled to open in theaters in 2027.
Ishidate Taichi (Violet Evergarden, City the Animation) is directing the film at Kyoto Animation. Shochiku will handle distribution.
The slice-of-life manga was serialized in Mystery Bonita magazine from October 2020 to November 2025. Akita Shoten published the eighth volume in July 2025, with the ninth and final volume set for release on May 15.
Dark Horse licensed the manga in English in August 2025 and will release the first volume on July 7.
Umi ga Hashiru End Roll ranked first in the Female Readers category in the 2022 Kono Manga ga Sugoi ranking and sixth in 2023. It was also nominated for the 15th Manga Taisho Awards and placed in the Unique Story/Art category in MyAnimeList’s 2024 and 2025 editions of You Should Read This Manga.
Synopsis
Umiko Chino, a 65-year-old widow, has no noteworthy hobbies. When her VCR breaks, she decides to visit a cinema—just as she once did with her husband on their first date. Instead of watching the movie, though, she finds herself observing the audience, particularly a young-looking person. After the credits roll, the stranger introduces himself as Kai Hamauchi, a male college student majoring in film. He agrees to fix Umiko’s VCR, but before leaving, he asks a question that changes her life: would she like to make a movie with him?
