June 6th is known as “Day of Fear.”
This day gets its name from the number “666” found in the Book of Revelation in the New Testament. Historically, “666” has been considered the number of the beast, symbolizing the devil.
With this day associated with “evil” as a starting point, we decided to shine a spotlight on “Villainess” characters. While they often appeared as haughty rivals obstructing the protagonist’s romance in the past, their portrayal has diversified significantly in recent years.
物語の主役に抜擢されたり、実は誤解されているだけで情に厚かったり、あるいは主人公の成長を後押しする存在であったりと、その魅力は広がり続けています。 They are now often chosen as main characters, might be misunderstood yet deeply compassionate, or serve as figures who push the protagonist towards growth. Their appeal continues to expand.
With that in mind, Anime! Anime! conducted a reader survey titled “Who is your favorite ‘Villainess’ character?” We received responses from 67 individuals during the survey period from May 27th to June 1st.
男女比は男性約55パーセント、女性約45パーセントで、ほぼ同数。年齢層は19歳以下が約40パーセント、20代が約25パーセントと若年層が中心でした。 The gender ratio was roughly equal, with males making up about 55 percent and females about 45 percent. The age demographic was primarily younger, with 19 and under accounting for about 40 percent and those in their 20s around 25 percent.

Titles from the 2020s Dominate the Top Spots!

Taking first place is Grace Auvergne from Akuyaku Reijou Tensei Ojisan. 支持率は約18パーセントでした。with a support rate of approximately 18 percent.
Akuyaku Reijou Tensei Ojisan は、52歳の真面目な公務員・屯田林憲三郎が交通事故に遭い、悪役令嬢グレイスに転生するところから始まる物語です。 tells the story of Tondabayashi Kenzaburou, a serious 52-year-old civil servant who gets into a traffic accident and is reincarnated as the villainess Grace.
「悪役令嬢だけど中身はアラフィフのおじさん。悪役らしく振る舞おうとしても、根っからの優しさが隠しきれずに慕われてしまう。そんな今までにない悪役令嬢ものが新鮮で面白かった」や「おじさんが主人公という設定が斬新！ 親父ギャグまでお嬢様言葉になってしまう特殊能力・優雅変換（エレガントチート）や、社会人経験で培った処世術でピンチを切り抜ける姿がエレガンス過ぎる」と、異色の主人公が支持を集めました。 Comments included: “She’s a villainess, but her true self is an almost 50-year-old ojisan. Even when she tries to act like a villainess, her inherent kindness can’t be hidden, and people end up adoring her. This completely new kind of villainess story was fresh and interesting,” and “The setting with an ojisan as the protagonist is groundbreaking! His special ability ‘Elegant Cheat’ transforms even dad jokes into refined ojou-sama speech, and the way he overcomes crises using the social skills cultivated through his work experience is simply too elegant.” This unconventional protagonist truly captured readers’ hearts.

Sharing second place are Catarina Claes from Otome Game no Hametsu Flag shika nai Akuyaku Reijou ni Tensei shite shimatta… (HameFura) and Yumiela Dolkness from Akuyaku Reijou Level 99 ~Watashi wa Ura Boss desu ga Maou de wa Arimasen~ が同票。支持率は約12パーセントでした。both receiving about 12 percent support.
HameFura のカタリナは、頭を打ったことで前世の記憶を取り戻し、自分が乙女ゲームの悪役令嬢に転生していたことに気づきます。国外追放や処刑といった「破滅フラグ」を回避しようと奮闘する中で、天性の人たらしっぷりを発揮。多くの人々を巻き込んでいきます。カタリナの無自覚な人の良さに加えて、劇場アニメ化されるなどの話題性も人気を後押ししました。 In HameFura, Catarina regains memories of her past life after hitting her head, realizing she has been reincarnated as the villainess of an otome game. As she struggles to avoid “doom flags” like exile or execution, her natural charisma shines through, drawing many people into her orbit. Catarina’s oblivious good nature, coupled with the buzz from its animated movie adaptation, contributed to her popularity.
悪役令嬢レベル99 のユミエラは、魔王を倒した後に登場する裏ボスという設定の悪役令嬢です。そんなキャラクターに転生した主人公は、穏やかに生きようと決意するものの、ゲーマー魂に火がついてレベルを99まで上げてしまいます。あまりの強さに魔王だと勘違いされるコミカルな展開や、学園を舞台にしたストーリー、手に汗握るバトルなど、多彩な要素が評価されています。 Yumiela in Akuyaku Reijou Level 99 is a villainess character designed to appear as the hidden boss after the Demon King is defeated. The protagonist, reincarnated as this character, decides to live a peaceful life, but her gamer spirit is ignited, and she raises her level to 99. The humorous development where her overwhelming strength leads people to mistake her for the Demon King, along with the school setting and thrilling battles, were among the diverse elements praised by voters.

ウィリアムズ・アリシア from Rekishi ni Nokoru Akujo ni naru zo には「乙女ゲームの世界に転生してきた主人公で、ヒロインよりも悪役令嬢に憧れているという、ちょっとズレた感覚が可愛い！」。 For Alicia Williams from Rekishi ni Nokoru Akujo ni naru zo, one comment read: “She’s a protagonist who reincarnated into the world of an otome game, but she has a slightly skewed sense of values where she admires the villainess more than the heroine, which is just adorable!”
アイリーン・ローレン・ドートリシュ from Akuyaku Reijou nano de Last Boss wo Katte mimashita には「破滅ルートを避けるため、何が起きても諦めないアイリーンに元気をもらいました。結婚を申し込んだ魔王のクロード様相手だと照れてしまう、初心な一面も大好き」。 Regarding Irene Loren Dautrich from Akuyaku Reijou nano de Last Boss wo Katte mimashita, a reader commented: “Irene’s determination to never give up no matter what happens, all to avoid the destruction route, really energized me. I also love her pure side where she gets flustered around Claude-sama, the Demon King she proposed to marry.”
ラビニア・ハーバート from Shoukoujo Sara には「人生で初めて出会った悪役令嬢はラビニアさんかもしれません。セーラをいじめる悪役を貫き通すかと思いきや、最後はあっさり和解するなど、なかなかの策士でした」。 For Lavinia Herbert from Shoukoujo Sara, a voter said: “Lavinia-san might have been the first villainess I encountered in my life. Just when you think she’ll stay the villain tormenting Sara, she surprisingly reconciles easily at the end, showing she was quite cunning.”
そして、主人公のライバルキャラクターにも投票がありました。 such as 竜崎麗香 from Ace wo Nerae! には「通称・お蝶夫人。実際は悪役でも夫人でもありませんが、金髪縦ロールの華やかなビジュアルやお嬢様言葉など、悪役令嬢のイメージの源流と言える存在ではないでしょうか」。 And votes also went to rival characters of the protagonist, such as Ryuuzaki Reika from Ace wo Nerae!: “Known as Ochou-fujin. While she’s not actually a villainess or a ‘fujin’ (madam), her flashy appearance with blonde vertical drills and her refined ojou-sama speech make her someone you could say is the origin of the ‘villainess’ image!”
今回のアンケートでは、2020年代のタイトルの主人公が上位を占める結果に。近年の悪役令嬢ブームを象徴するようなランキングとなりました。 In this survey, protagonists from titles released in the 2020s largely dominated the top ranks. The results truly reflect the recent boom in villainess-themed stories.
