Anime fans rejoice: the original animated film Super Kaguya Hime! is heading back to theaters on September 18, this time with an array of special format screenings alongside a re-release of the standard version. A new trailer for the enhanced edition has also been unveiled.
The film marks the feature-length directorial debut of Yamashita Seigo, the animation creator known for his striking opening sequences for hit series such as Jujutsu Kaisen season 1, Chainsaw Man, and Urusei Yatsura. Super Kaguya Hime! has been streaming worldwide as a Netflix original film.
Initially released in theaters for a limited one-week run starting February 20—about a month after its Netflix debut—the film saw overwhelming demand. Despite opening on just 19 screens, it ranked fifth in the weekend box office. Following fan and theater requests, the run was extended and expanded, and the film continues to screen nationwide more than three months later, surpassing 2.5 billion yen in box office revenue.
The theatrical run originally concluded on June 18, but now the film will return on September 18 with multiple premium formats. These include 4D experiences such as MX4D and 4DX with motion seats and environmental effects, the three-screen immersive SCREENX, the combined ULTRA 4DX (SCREENX + 4DX), and Dolby Atmos for a deeply enveloping sound experience. A standard version re-screening will also take place.
The newly released special format trailer features the line “Sonnara Kaguya! Mou ikkai!” (Well then, Kaguya! One more time!) followed by a remix of “World is Mine CPK! Remix” sung by Tsukimi Yachiyo (CV: Hayami Saori). The footage reworks the first trailer released in November of last year, emphasizing the film’s “return” to the big screen.
The online event “Tsukuyomi Kanshasai” featuring 3D versions of Kaguya and the cast—which drew attention via crowdfunding—is now scheduled for December this year. There are still many surprises in store for fans of the film.
