NEEDY GIRL OVERDOSE Voice Actress Shiina Satsuki on Playing Gokubara Mibika: ‘I Wanted to Keep Her Character Consistent’

The July 2026 issue of Megami Magazine features an interview with Shiina Satsuki, the voice of Gokubara Mibika in the TV anime NEEDY GIRL OVERDOSE (also known as Nidiga). In this extended version of the magazine’s “Megami’s Voice” interview series, Shiina talks about her first impressions of the series, the challenges of playing a reserved character, and the unique dynamics of the original anime unit Karamazov.

First Encounters with the World of NEEDY GIRL OVERDOSE

—What were your first thoughts when you learned about NEEDY GIRL OVERDOSE?

Shiina says she already knew the original game and had an image of it as a somewhat dark work with light-and-shadow characters like Chotenshi-chan and Ame-chan. When she heard that original characters would appear in the anime adaptation, she became excited to see what kind of show it would become.

—How did you feel when you first received the script?

Before the script, she received a text-only document that read like a novel, containing episodes for the entire TV series. The timeline was deliberately mixed up, making it unclear whether events were past, imaginary, or ideal dreams. She found the mystery appealing and felt it was a work that invited speculation.

—What was your first impression of Mibika?

Shiina was immediately drawn to the character’s cute visual design, which she loved. She sensed a strong will and a refusal to flatter, and she was certain she would like the character.

—You must have been overjoyed when you were cast as Mibika?

While happy, Shiina also felt fear. It was her first time advancing to a studio audition for a role, and she worried that if she voiced Mibika, people who shared her taste in characters might stop liking her. She felt a strong sense of responsibility and was anxious about working with the main cast, especially since she was new to anime recording. With time before the first session, she was restless every day.

Finding Mibika’s Voice

—Were you very nervous for the first recording?

Extremely. Since Karamazov is an anime-original unit, the staff and cast were all feeling their way together. Although she had passed the audition, she was still uncertain whether her interpretation of Mibika was correct.

—How did you build the character?

Shiina received detailed notes from creator Nyarura about Mibika’s image: noble, calm, and self-possessed. She also considered that within Karamazov, Lolipop handles the full range of emotions, and Negichiga likely has a cool, “mero” style, so she made Mibika speak in a doll-like, matter-of-fact manner to differentiate her.

—Does the small emotional range make it difficult to perform?

Yes. If she shows too much emotion, Mibika’s character wavers, but if she stays too flat, the performance becomes monotonous. She constantly thought about how to keep it varied while distinguishing between Mibika as a streamer and her private self, and whether her speech changes between past and present.

—What direction did you receive during recording?

Mibika is not the type to voice her realizations aloud, and she rarely ad-libs, so Shiina was often told not to add lines. One memorable direction came in episode 1, after Mibika says “I’ll become the most beautiful princess” and the window glass breaks. Shiina had imagined a muttering delivery, but the director asked for a theatrical, spotlight-facing performance, which surprised her but she went for it.

—Does your performance change when Karamazov’s three members speak together?

Yes. Initially she kept her energy low, but the high energy of the other two pulled her along. Recording together brought out many new aspects of the performance. She learned a lot from Kawaguchi Rina (Lolipop) and Hoshiki Seina (Negichiga), who often approached their roles differently than she expected. The more they worked together, the more she understood their range, and she feels grateful for the experience.

Episode 6: Mibika’s Spotlight

—Episode 6 focused on Mibika. How was that?

Shiina caught the flu on the recording day and had to record separately. Since episode 6 had many of Mibika’s lines, the other cast members texted her saying they finished early. They had planned to go out for a meal together after, but that fell through, which made her sad. However, recording alone gave her more time to focus, which she appreciated.

—Did recording alone make it easier?

Episode 6 had many scenes where Mibika screams and suffers alone, so it might have been easier. The director gave detailed notes like “be more indifferent” or “show more contempt.” While she prefers having the other actors present, by that point she understood their performances well enough to imagine their reactions.

—Episode 6 revealed new sides of Mibika.

Shiina felt that almost all of Mibika’s emotions came out, including parts she never showed others and her past. The scene where she talks to dolls in her room and the stage performance stood out. The episode also highlighted Mibika’s obsession with beauty—wearing Lolita fashion and doing makeup every day. Shiina respects how Mibika hides her effort and shows only her beautiful side to fans.

—Do you relate to Mibika?

Shiina laughs that she gets down when she gets a pimple, but she wouldn’t skip school or a live over it—though Mibika might. As for differences, Shiina says she doesn’t throw teacups or break windows. She sees Mibika as someone who divides the world into people she respects and those she doesn’t. Throwing teacups or cursing is a sign of trust, so Mibika likely relies heavily on Karamazov. Shiina admires how Mibika stays true to her ideal self despite criticism, and sometimes wishes she could speak as bluntly.

Karamazov Dynamics and Chotenshi-chan

—What are your impressions of the other Karamazov members?

Lolipop is the leader but airheaded, with clear emotions and funny reactions. Negichiga sometimes joins Mibika in teasing Lolipop and sometimes watches with a smile. The three have a good balance. Shiina thinks that without Lolipop’s hero-like nature, Mibika and Negichiga would never have formed a unit—Mibika is too proud, and Negichiga would seem calculating if she suggested it.

—What do you find appealing about Chotenshi-chan?

Shiina sees Chotenshi-chan as a socially phenomenal, complete existence who always seems at ease. To someone who doesn’t know Ame-chan, Chotenshi-chan appears like an ideal angel who gives the right words at the right time. Her overwhelming presence makes her impossible not to like.

Memorable Scenes and Behind the Scenes

—Which scenes from the first eight episodes stand out?

In episode 7, at the café where Ame-chan and Negichiga talk, there are customers playing a card game. The voice actors performed with such exaggerated, comedic lines that Shiina struggled not to laugh in the booth. The strange shouts like “Kipō!” became a running joke among the Karamazov cast. Episode 3, though Mibika doesn’t appear, left an impression because of Ame-chan’s inner turmoil, especially the fight with her mother—every word stung.

—Any other memorable recording moments?

There were always onigiri with unusual fillings brought in as treats, leading to a scramble. To avoid disappointing latecomers, the cast hid notes about which fillings were gone. Shiina’s favorite was egg yolk soboro; tuna simmered in soy sauce and smoked cheese with pickled daikon were popular. Also, in one scene Negichiga wore roller skates, and in the next she had a girl on her lap—the cast joked about her teleporting, often asking Hoshiki, “Aren’t you going to fly again?”

Future Aspirations and Advice

—What kind of roles would you like to try next?

Shiina is open to any role, but since Mibika was calm, she’d like to try a more physically active character. She gained a lot of experience on Nidiga and hopes to participate in more recordings.

—What should viewers look forward to in the story ahead?

Episode 9 was even more challenging than episode 6. The fight between Mibika and Kache that starts at the end of episode 8 reveals Mibika’s true feelings. She put a lot of effort into episode 9, so she hopes people watch the exchange with Kache. Also, Chotenshi-chan and Karamazov will clash seriously, and there might be a Karamazov character song. The music becomes more powerful. Though Nidiga has many painful episodes, it also has moments that can lighten someone’s heart, so she hopes new viewers will discover it.

Megami ni Question: Shiina Satsuki’s Quick Answers

Q. Your charm point?
A. My soft nose. When I press it, it squishes a lot. I didn’t like it at first, but I learned that not many people have such a squishy nose, so now it’s a favorite point.

Q. Your nickname?
A. Shi-chan, Shiina, Shiinamonchi (suggested by Chotenshi-chan). Everyone calls me Shi-chan at first, but eventually they just say Shiina. On the Nidiga set, I’m called Shi-chan. But on a day I was absent, Chotenshi-chan spread the rumor that I wanted to be called Shiinamonchi! I’ve never been called that nor wanted to be!

Q. Your voice characteristic?
A. A water-like voice. When I’m in a group part, people often say my voice has character but is easy to blend. I think of it as water-like.

Q. Your personality?
A. Easygoing. I often misplace things. The other day I left my health insurance card at a convenience store and my credit card at a shop on the same day. I panicked when I got home, but the shops contacted me, so I was relieved.

Q. What are you into now?
A. Poko a Pokemon and Tomodachi Collection: Waku Waku Life. Both are time sinks, so I only play them while traveling. I want to make a Mibika character in Tomodachi Collection and set her catchphrase to “Low-class.”

Q. What streams do you find yourself watching?
A. Game streams. Character creation in Tomodachi Collection and Quarantine Zone: The Last Check (a zombie-or-human identification game) always catch my eye.

Q. What game do you end up playing?
A. Puzzle game ads (laughs). I love puzzle games, and when an ad pops up, I end up playing even if I don’t need to clear it. I play while watching videos.

Q. A catchphrase for this work?
A. Sparkling beautiful girl anime. The fashion changes a lot in Nidiga. Chotenshi-chan wears the same outfit, but Karamazov’s three members change clothes, hairstyles, and even have casual wear and live costumes. That’s the sparkling beautiful girl element. The creators considered that characters with high beauty standards wouldn’t wear the same clothes every day, so please enjoy the fashion.
