Fans of the gentle Moomin world can now add a creative twist to their daily lives. A special collaboration between the beloved Moomin characters and kitpas, the eco-friendly crayons made from rice wax, is set to launch on August 9, 2026 — fittingly celebrated as Moomin Day. The products will be available at stationery and variety stores across Japan, as well as at Moomin shops and online stores.
Moomin, created by Finnish author, painter, and artist Tove Jansson, has captured hearts worldwide. The stories of Moomin troll and his friends have been translated and published in over 50 countries. Based on the original novels, comics, and picture books, Moomin merchandise, attractions, and animations are cherished not only in Finland but also in Japan and many other nations.
Kitpas is a sustainable art material whose main ingredient is rice wax derived from domestic Japanese rice bran oil. It is gentle on both the environment and children’s bodies. This collaboration brings together Moomin’s worldview of loving nature and living a rich, heartwarming life with kitpas’ eco-conscious philosophy.
Kitpas crayons glide smoothly on smooth surfaces like window glass and mirrors, and can be easily wiped off with a damp cloth or tissue. When traced with a wet brush, they dissolve like watercolor paints, allowing for transparent, watercolor-like expressions.
The tin cases are designed to be collectible and adorable. In addition to the 16-color tin, there are four types of 3-color tins, each themed after Moomin, Little My, Snufkin, and Nyoro Nyoro.
One of the most appealing features is that the crayons are made from plant-based ingredients (wax from rice bran), so they are safe even if accidentally put in the mouth. Families with small children can enjoy worry-free creative play.
Stores will also feature a special counter display assortment that evokes the Moomin world, containing six 16-color tins and six each of the four 3-color tin varieties.
