Sailor Moon Shining Theater Shinagawa Tokyo Season 2 Review: AI Villain, New Songs, and Fan Service Galore

The second season of “Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon – Shining Theater Shinagawa Tokyo -” opened on August 3 at the Shinagawa Prince Hotel Club eX in Tokyo. Ahead of the regular run, a preview performance was held, and this review captures the magic from the perspective of a first-time theatergoer.

AI Takes Center Stage as the New Enemy

The long-awaited new theater production, which began its run in April 2026 and continues through November, features all 10 Sailor Guardians in a completely original story. The first season (April–July) already made waves on social media for its high character fidelity. Now, Season 2 introduces a fresh theme: artificial intelligence.

The story follows Usagi and her friends as they visit a new theme park in Tokyo where an AI creates everything perfectly. But a mysterious enemy appears: Queen Valcia, who uses AI technology to steal Usagi’s heart and even alters the bodies of Mamoru, Ami, Rei, Makoto, and Minako. Sensing the crisis, Chibiusa, Haruka, Michiru, Setsuna, and Hotaru rise to help, but they fall before the power of the flawless AI. The battle for true love—human vs. AI—begins.

The production uses a double-cast system: Team Gold Moon and Team Silver Moon. The preview featured Team Silver Moon.

Jewel-Like Merchandise and Enchanting Decor

As a stage novice, the author felt nervous entering the venue, but the moment she stepped inside, the world of Sailor Moon enveloped her. The corridor from the lobby to the theater was lined with glittering goods that sparkled like jewels. Moon-themed mugs, T-shirts, and blankets struck a perfect balance—not too childish, yet nostalgic. The fanlights, which can change color among 11 character-specific hues and feature interchangeable top parts, were especially adorable.

The decorations and displays were equally stunning. Original new illustrations by Naoko Takeuchi were so mystical that the author paused before taking photos, not wanting to blink. The theater’s hallway decorations differ between the first and second floors, each detail designed to make fans’ hearts flutter. The venue also offers character-themed original drinks and sweets; the author noted a personal interest in Luna’s shaped Baumkuchen (plain) and vowed to buy it next time.

Live Part: New Songs and Heartfelt Fan Service

Despite lingering anxiety about understanding the story, the Sailor Guardians themselves swept all doubt away. The cast looked as if they had stepped straight out of the illustrations, with sparkling costumes and charming personalities. The songs and dialogue were emotionally charged, and the dance routines were sharp—both synchronized group moves and individual expressions. The scenes between Mamoru and Usagi were particularly beautiful.

The show’s story, which touches on modern societal themes, was thought-provoking and highly polished. After an emotional conclusion, the live part began. This season’s live setlist includes four songs: “Moonlight Densetsu,” “Music of the Spheres,” “Solar Miracle Make Up,” and “Brilliant Justice,” all performed with impressive vocal skill.

During the live part, audience members were allowed to take photos and wave penlights. The Sailor Guardians smiled, waved, and made heart signs—a barrage of fan service. Then came the new hand-delivered present segment, where cast members personally handed gifts to audience members.

The author herself received a present from Super Sailor Pluto / Setsuna Meioh (played by Tamayama Juri) and was immediately hooked. To top it off, Super Sailor Mercury / Ami Mizuno (played by Maruyama Junrei) blew a kiss, sealing the deal.

A Place for Everyone

This first experience with “Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon – Shining Theater Shinagawa Tokyo -” proved that the show gives dreams to everyone and satisfies all. Every moment creates lasting memories. The production is sure to keep expanding its fan base and growing even more powerful.
