Looking Back: The Original Anime Adaptation

This isn’t the first time Sugar Sugar Rune has enchanted viewers on screen. A previous television anime adaptation, produced by Pierrot, aired for 51 episodes from Summer 2005 to Spring 2006. If you’re curious to watch the original magical journey, Darkroom, a streaming platform by Synergetic Film, is currently streaming the series with subtitles.

The Manga’s Journey

Moyoco Anno’s original Sugar Sugar Rune manga ran in the magazine Nakayoshi from August 2003 to April 2007. Kodansha collected the chapters into eight volumes, with the final volume released in September 2007.

Internationally, the manga was first published in English by Del Rey (which is now defunct) between September 2005 and September 2008. More recently, Udon Entertainment has re-licensed the manga and has plans to release the first volume sometime in 2026.

The series also received significant recognition, winning the prestigious 29th Kodansha Manga Awards in the children’s manga category.

What’s the Story About?

Here’s a synopsis of the captivating world of Sugar Sugar Rune:

The queen of the Magical World is selected through a competition in which two young witches travel to the Human World to gather the hearts of boys who fall in love with them. This time, best friends Chocolat Meilleure and Vanilla Mieux, the daughters of the previous queen candidates, enroll in a human school in order to commence the challenge. Aided by their familiar spirits and mentor Rockin Robin, the young witches learn to adjust to human life as each aims to become the next queen.

Chocolat, who is popular with boys in the Magical World, finds that her strategies do not work well for capturing human hearts. In contrast, Vanilla’s quiet and shy personality seems to make her the center of attraction. To make matters more complicated, a mysterious boy by the name of Pierre Tempête de Neige seems to be after Chocolat’s heart. The two witches’ friendship is put to the test as the competition intensifies.
