The theatrical anime Mahō Shōjo Madoka Magica: Walpurgis no Kaiten is currently showing in theaters. New details have emerged about the mysterious character “Namae no Nai Jōkyūsei / Wass” (The Unnamed Upperclassman / Wass), voiced by Maaya Sakamoto, along with a new PV featuring her scenes. Additionally, the previously hidden design for the third-week visitor bonus “Visual Postcard Set” has been unveiled.
The film is a brand-new theatrical work in the Mahō Shōjo Madoka Magica franchise, reuniting key staff members including director Akiyuki Shinbo, scriptwriter Gen Urobuchi, and original character designer Ume Aoki. It opened on August 28, 2026, and tells a direct sequel to the 2013 film Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Rebellion, continuing from that film’s shocking last scenes.
In the new story, Homura Akemi, who became a devil out of love for Madoka, is central. The world she has created and the magical girls who descend once again set the stage as the gears of the Madoka Magica world begin to turn slowly once more.
The newly revealed Wass is a girl who was once guided by the Law of Cycles but has returned to the mortal world through the depths of Nazuka Sokone. She bears a face strikingly similar to Homura, and is characterized by her aloof demeanor and peculiar way of speaking. She appears as an upperclassman whose name and true nature remain unknown to everyone, known only through rumors. Additionally, the cast list has been updated to include Yoshino Aoyama as Girl A and Ryōko Shintani as Hitomi Shizuki.
From September 12, the third-week visitor bonus “Visual Postcard Set” will feature Wass in a design that continues from the key visual’s Madoka and Homura. Moviegoers can receive either a “Madoka / Wass” or “Homura / Wass” two-card set, while supplies last. The cards are 105×148mm, and the design cannot be chosen.
The film also released a new key visual by Ume Aoki, showcasing the continuing story of the magical girls.
The film is currently screening in theaters across Japan. The theme song, “Kanata,” is performed by FictionJunction.
