Studio Color, the animation production arm of Hideaki Anno’s company Khara, marked its 20th anniversary as an animation studio on September 15, 2026. The official X (formerly Twitter) account for Khara acknowledged the milestone, and fans have flooded social media with congratulations.
A Studio Born from Evangelion
Khara itself was founded on May 17, 2006. The company name comes from the Greek word for “joy,” and both the name and handwritten logo were created by board member Anno Moyoco. Studio Color was established on September 15 of that same year, specifically to begin production on the Evangelion New Theatrical Edition series. Anno Moyoco also designed the handwritten logo for Studio Color.
In recent years, Studio Color’s work has included “Shin Evangelion Gekijoban” (2021), directed by Tsurumaki Kazuya and serving as the fourth and final installment of the Rebuild of Evangelion series. Anno Hideaki also contributed to “Shin Ultraman” (2022) as planner and screenwriter, and “Shin Kamen Rider” (2023) as screenwriter and director.
In 2025, Studio Color teamed up with Sunrise for its first collaboration on a Gundam project, producing “Kido Senshi Gundam GQuuuuuuX” under director Tsurumaki. Early in 2026, the studio held the Evangelion 30th anniversary event “EVANGELION:30+;” in February, and in June announced it was joining the long-form animation “BAAHUBALI: THE ETERNAL WAR PART 1” (working title), a follow-up to the Indian “Baahubali” film series, with Studio Color and Maeda Mahiro taking on main staff roles.
Additionally, a brand-new Evangelion series is in the works, with Tsurumaki Kazuya and Yatabe Toko co-directing, and Studio Color and CloverWorks handling animation production. Details are still awaited.

Following the company’s 20th anniversary as a corporation earlier this year in May, Studio Color reached its own milestone on September 15. In its official X post, Khara thanked fans: “We have been able to walk these 20 years thanks to the support of everyone who has cheered us on. We sincerely thank you for your long-standing support,” and added, “We look forward to your continued support of Studio Color.”
On social media, users posted messages such as “Congratulations!” “I’ll keep watching your works!” “Take care of your health, staff members!” and “Looking forward to the new projects!”
All eyes remain on Studio Color’s future creations.
