Warning: The following contains spoilers for Episode 83 of Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World Season 4.
After Subaru completed the integration of his personalities in the previous episode, he stands ready to move forward as “Emilia’s first knight.” Episode 83, titled “Good Loser,” acts as the launchpad for his triumphant surge, and it also shines a long-awaited spotlight on Julius Euclius as he stages his own dramatic comeback. This installment is the sixth of eight episodes in the Recapture Arc, so the season’s climax is clearly in sight.

Fans weren’t the only ones holding their breath. Voice actress Ueda Kana, who plays Julius’s master Anastasia Hoshin, took to X once the broadcast began: “It’s started!!! I want to talk about so much, but I’ll save it for tomorrow’s radio.” Her excitement perfectly mirrored the mood on social media.
Subaru Reclaims His Role
The episode picks up with Subaru racing to Emilia, who is locked in a one-on-one battle with Rai Batenkaitos. He shouts his iconic declaration to the battlefield: “My name is Natsuki Subaru! I am Emilia’s first knight!” His words ignite a spark of hope in Emilia, whose face lights up with joy. Fans were quick to react: “Emilia-chan is so cute trying to hug him out of happiness,” “She looks genuinely relieved,” and “There’s so much reassurance in Subaru’s tone when he calls her Emilia-tan.”

Rai escapes, but not before consuming Emilia’s memories again. Even so, Emilia remains uninjured in spirit because Subaru—the only one who still remembers her—has now recovered his own memory. In fact, she shows concern for Subaru’s well-being after the integration, proving her selfless nature.

The party reunites with Beatrice, Ram, Patrasche, and later Shaula, Meili, and Anastasia. But when a rule is broken, Shaula transforms into a scorpion, forcing Subaru, Beatrice, and Meili to deal with the stampede and the giant beast. Meanwhile, Ram confronts the fleeing Rai, vowing to make him die “squealing like a pig” for stealing Rem’s memories and tearing apart their sisterly bond.

Julius’s Resolution
Elsewhere, Julius remains locked in battle with the original Sword Saint, Reid Astrea. Emilia and Anastasia arrive, and while Emilia hurries ahead, Julius resumes his fight with Anastasia watching over him. With Subaru having recovered, Julius decides he cannot afford to lose either. He breaks through his own shell with renewed resolve:
“Let me reintroduce myself. I am Julius Euclius, first knight of Anastasia Hoshin-sama. Playing the nameless knight ends here…”

The audience, recalling Julius’s devastating defeat at Reid’s hands, rallied behind him: “You’ve got this, Julius! Fight!” “Defeat him and move forward!” “Julius, so cool…!”
This Julius is no longer the man who once hid behind a hollow facade. He lets go of the lingering spirits he had clung to and forms a new contract with his present self. “A facade I decided to wear forever,” he declares. “The position shapes the man.” Even Reid, who had been treating him lightly, finally draws his sword in response.

“Reid actually drew his sword!” “Is he finally taking this seriously?” True to expectations, the duel escalates into an intense, back-and-forth clash. Anastasia watches silently, but everything she has held inside begins to surface.
Anastasia’s Hidden Heart
The reason Anastasia had been unable to resurface from within Echidna’s body was her fear of forgetting Julius after her memories were eaten by the Gluttony. She had shut herself away to avoid that pain. Now, with Echidna’s urging, she finally steps forward and witnesses her knight at his most impressive moment.
“Go, Julius! My knight!”

Julius lands a decisive blow on Reid, and although Reid’s time limit was a factor, Julius survives the encounter by his own strength. Had Roy’s body not been possessed by Reid, Julius might well have died. But he endured, and Reid’s body crumbles. It’s a victory in itself—Julius lives, and the threat is gone.
Meanwhile, Emilia reaches the first floor of the second trial and encounters a colossal being…

With both Julius and Anastasia’s emotions brought to the forefront, Episode 83 is being hailed as another “god-tier” episode. “I was crying through the entire second half,” “My eyes are too blurry to see,” “The animation was absolutely insane” —these are just a few of the fan reactions. Some even wrote heartfelt paragraphs about the characters’ growth.
The Recapture Arc now has only two episodes left. We’re still waiting to see if Shaula will be saved.
