Summer anime Yani Neko aired episode 11, “Nyaa-tachi in Kyoto nya,” on September 17, 2026, at 24:30. The animal residents of the apartment head to Kyoto for what looks like a school trip—and they’re in for more than just sightseeing.
Surprise Opening Theme Cover
After the pre-title scene featuring Yani Neko’s mother Shizue, the familiar opening theme “Nanmo Nee” by Wasureらんねえよ started playing—but something was off. The voice was different. It turned out to be a cover version by Necry Talkie, the band responsible for the ending theme “Kemuri to Blue.”
Even the apartment’s landlord (voiced by Inada Tetsu) was taken aback, tweeting his delight: “Last week’s Kagura Ayi, and now this—the creators’ playful surprises are the best.” Viewers were equally thrilled.
Kyoto Trip: Omikuji and Mayhem
Yani Neko’s younger sister, the responsible honor-student JK cat Imoko, is on a school trip to Kyoto. At the same time, manga artist Ochinpo Tatsurou (real name: Tatsuno Saori) declares, “Let’s go to Kyoto!” for research on her serialized manga. The bunch piles into her new car (bought on a loan) and heads off to the ancient capital.
Since the trip is covered by the editorial department, Ochinpo is eager to splurge, but her penny-pinching habits kick in and she ends up at a beef bowl chain. She proudly announces, “The theme this time is extravagant spending! Let’s trample the ancient capital!”
When they draw omikuji, Ochinpo gets “Great Misfortune” with a warning that “death creeps behind you.” She keeps drawing until she gets “Great Fortune,” but ends up with another “Great Misfortune.” Meanwhile, Yani Neko is just happy to be collecting them all.
Night in Kyoto
That evening, they let loose over duck hot pot. The college student Al Neko blends her drinks, while Ochinpo indulges in geisha entertainment. A call from the publishing company “Koudanso” interrupts the fun.
Back at the apartment, the landlord finds the silence surprising: “Without them, it’s so quiet……” Fans noticed his loneliness, with comments like “The landlord is secretly a lonely soul” and “He loves everyone after all.”
Day Two: Bamboo Spears and a Mysterious Mosaic
The next day, following Ochinpo’s rule “do everything that costs money,” the group experiences “ankou megguri” and visits Nijūjō (Nijo Castle), where the “Nyansei Hōkan” was once declared. They also study the history of beast-people not taught in school.
In the exhibition of weapons used in past battles, a display of “bamboo spears” includes a normal one, a long one, a bent one, and one that conspicuously has a mosaic overlay. Fans were baffled: “Why is there a mosaic on a bamboo spear?” and “That one spear is blurred out, lol.”
The Deer King Arrives
At a park, Yani Neko starts begging tourists for deer crackers, much to the embarrassment of her junior, Yaku Neko. Then a deer with piercing eyes appears, declaring, “That deer cracker belongs to us. You filthy beast-people!” The deer identifies itself as the “Deer King” and claims the area as its territory.
The voice behind the Deer King is Nakao Ryūsei, known for roles like Freeza in Dragon Ball Z and Baikinman in Soreike! Anpanman. Fans reacted with excitement: “Is that Freeza?” and “The deer’s voice is Freeza!”
Despite the regal demeanor, Yani Neko offers the deer a cigarette—and the screen immediately displays a warning: “Do not give cigarettes to deer.” Viewers couldn’t help but laugh at the absurdity.
On the way back to their hometown, Ochinpo receives another call from Koudanso, hinting at what’s to come.
Ending Theme Swap and Director’s Note
The ending theme also pulled a surprise: it was a cover of “Kemuri to Blue” by Wasureらんねえよ, reversing the usual arrangement. Fans were stunned: “They swapped the vocals?!” and “The singers switched places!”
Director Kimura Taku commented on the show’s “Jaryū Kaihō-ban” version (available on AT-X and some streaming services) and acknowledged the theme song switch: “The eyecatch this time is voiced by Necry Talkie! OP and ED vocals are swapped! Look closely at the visuals—only Yani Neko can pull this off.”
