Gekijouban Mahou Shoujo Madoka☆Magika: Walpurgis no Kaiten has crossed 2.1 billion yen at the Japanese box office, passing Gekijouban Mahou Shoujo Madoka☆Magika [Shinpen] Hangyaku no Monogatari to set a new franchise record 13 years after the previous film.
A New Series Box-Office Record
The new film opened nationwide in Japan on August 28, 2026. By September 23, its 27th day in theaters, it had drawn 1,262,137 admissions and earned 2,102,605,880 yen. That total pushed it past the 2.08 billion yen of Gekijouban Mahou Shoujo Madoka☆Magika [Shinpen] Hangyaku no Monogatari, released in 2013, making Walpurgis no Kaiten the highest-grossing film in the series.
About 15 years after the 2011 TV series began and about 13 years after [Shinpen] Hangyaku no Monogatari, the long-awaited new film opened at No. 1 in the weekend ranking for both admissions and box office. It reached 1 billion yen in four days, 1.5 billion yen in 10 days, and 1 million admissions in 17 days, outpacing the previous film.
A Long-Awaited Sequel
Walpurgis no Kaiten is a completely new theatrical anime for Mahou Shoujo Madoka☆Magika, with key staff including Shinbou Akiyuki, Urobuchi Gen, and Aoki Ume reuniting for the project. It is a direct sequel that follows the shocking final scene of the 2013 film [Shinpen] Hangyaku no Monogatari. The story depicts Akemi Homura, who became a devil because of her feelings for Madoka, the newly created world, and the magical girls who descend into it once more. The gears of the Mahou Shoujo Madoka☆Magika world begin to turn slowly again.
Post-Release Momentum
After opening, the film continued to build momentum. On September 12, information about new characters and spoilers were unlocked, and posts with in-depth impressions and analysis spread on social media. Dolby Cinema screenings began on September 18, expanding the ways audiences could experience the film.

From September 26 to October 2, during the film’s fifth week, theaters will distribute a Shaft original postcard. The postcard measures 105 by 148 mm. The offer ends when supplies run out, and designs cannot be selected. From October 3, which is Kaname Madoka’s birthday, 4DX and MX4D screenings are also scheduled, adding new formats alongside regular and Dolby Cinema screenings.
