India Theatrical Debut Set for October 2

The 45th film in the Eiga Doraemon series, Eiga Doraemon: Shin Nobita no Kaitei Kiganjou, will open across India on October 2. The film was released in Japan in February this year. This is the first theatrical release of an Eiga Doraemon film in India, where Doraemon has been familiar to audiences through TV broadcasts for 21 years.

The Indian release will be shown in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu as dubbed versions without subtitles. PVR INOX Pictures is handling distribution.

Mumbai Premiere Welcomes Doraemon and Friends

On September 26, a premiere screening for Eiga Doraemon: Shin Nobita no Kaitei Kiganjou was held at Inorbit Mall Malad, a major commercial facility in Mumbai. Fans who had been waiting for Doraemon’s movie-theater adventure gathered at the venue, and the air was filled with excitement before the screening.

Before the film, fans in the venue joined in a large chorus of ‘Doraemon no Uta,’ creating a warm sense of unity that showed how Doraemon has been loved across generations. Doraemon, Nobita, Shizuka, Gian, and Suneo then appeared on stage. The moment they were seen, loud cheers and applause erupted from the audience, and the venue’s excitement reached its peak. Many smiles also broke out during the photo session.

When the screening began, the scene in which Doraemon and Nobita set out on an undersea adventure raised the audience’s anticipation and brought a big reaction. Children and adults alike watched the new adventure of the friends on screen with shining eyes. The premiere became an event filled with high expectations and enthusiasm for India’s first theatrical release of an Eiga Doraemon film.

India Events Extend Beyond the Theater

With the first Indian theatrical release confirmed, efforts to let people enjoy the film’s world outside movie theaters have begun across the country. Events are being held at malls in various regions, and a program linked with schools has also started. Through Doraemon, children are gaining opportunities connected to learning and hands-on experiences.

In addition, Doraemon-designed rickshaws and buses are scheduled to run in the future, allowing people to encounter Doraemon within city scenery. Excitement for the film’s release is spreading into daily life across India.

Japan to Air India Study Abroad Special

Following the excitement over the Indian theatrical release, a special project connecting Doraemon and India has also been decided for Japan. On November 7 (Saturday), TV Asahi and its network of 24 stations will air the special episode ‘Namaste! Nobita, India ni Ryuugaku’ from 17:00 to 17:30. In the episode, Doraemon and Nobita visit India.

Episode Story

The episode begins when Nobita, who cannot seem to succeed at anything, sees a TV commercial recruiting applicants for overseas study and says he wants to study abroad. Doraemon is surprised that Nobita wants to test himself in a foreign country where no one knows him, but Doraemon gives him the ‘Dokodemo Ryuugaku Nafuda.’ If he writes the country he wants to visit and his name on the name tag, he can study abroad for just one day.

Nobita, who happened to be eating curry, chooses India so he can eat authentic curry. He writes a profile to be transferred to a school and puts on the name tag, and his study destination is set as an elementary school in Delhi, the capital of India. Because Nobita feels anxious alone, he asks Doraemon to come with him, and the two head to Delhi through the ‘Dokodemo Door.’

Arriving in Delhi, where crowds are so dense that the roads are barely visible, the two eat ‘Honyaku Konnyaku Lassi Flavor’ and use the name tag’s map function to head to the school. Nobita immediately changes into a uniform and, together with Doraemon (who has been made small with the ‘Itadaki Koban’), goes to the classroom. His classmates highly praise his cat’s cradle, and Nobita joyfully says, ‘Study abroad is wonderful!’

However, during math class, while everyone is solving difficult two-digit multiplication problems, Nobita is told, ‘Since Nobita is a genius, this problem is easy for you, right?’ In fact, his profile contained a huge lie: that he is number one at both studies and sports and is called a once-in-a-century genius. Surrounded by everyone who mistakenly believes he is a genius, Nobita finds himself in a desperate pinch.

With India’s movie-theater debut and Japan’s India episode linked, Doraemon’s world is spreading across borders this autumn. The new adventures depicted on the screen and on television are drawing attention.
