The TV anime Seibetsu ‘Mona Lisa’ no Kimi e. will begin broadcasting in 2027. The production has also unveiled a main visual, the first main PV, and the ending theme: imase’s newly written song ‘Mayoi wa Hikari.’ Seven additional cast members have been announced as well.
A Story About a World Without a Fixed Gender
Based on Yoshimura Sen’s manga, Seibetsu ‘Mona Lisa’ no Kimi e. was serialized on Square Enix’s Gangan Online and has surpassed 1 million copies in circulation. The story is set in a world where, from around age 12, people’s bodies change toward the gender they desire, and by around age 14 they settle into male or female. The protagonist, Hinase, is the only person who remains ‘sexless’ even at 18. The coming-of-age ensemble drama follows Hinase as the character confronts their own way of being, love, and the question of who they are.
The main visual introduces Arima Hinase (CV: Anzai Chika), a third-year high school student who reaches 18 without a gender while everyone around them has one, together with childhood friends Ritsu and Shiori and their classmates. New character profiles have also been revealed.
The first main PV highlights the series’ worldview and the anime’s distinctive turquoise-blue expression, accompanied by imase’s ending theme ‘Mayoi wa Hikari.’
imase on the Ending Theme
imase commented that the work overlaps with him in many ways. He said he related to Hinase’s struggle over being made to decide a gender and wondering what future awaits that decision. Even after a gender is chosen, he noted, people must still decide how to live and continue to hesitate every day. The song was written with the feeling that no choice is wrong and that the hesitation itself is light.
He also mentioned that he enjoys games with multiple endings, where the player’s choices change the future and create a sense of responsibility. For this work, he said he enjoyed imagining what Hinase will choose and what future will follow.
Cast Additions
Anzai Chika is already confirmed as Arima Hinase. The newly announced cast members are Aoyama Yoshino, Okamoto Nobuhiko, Sakuma Daisuke, Chiharu, Hatano Shou, Mikawa Kaguya, and Wakayama Shion. The characters they will play have not yet been revealed, with further details expected in follow-up announcements.
