Evangelion’s continuing legacy

Evangelion began with the 1995 TV anime Shin Seiki Evangelion and became a science-fiction robot series about 14-year-old boys and girls who fight the mysterious Angels using the Evangelion. Beyond action, the story explores the characters’ inner lives and conflicts as well as the truth of the world, and it grew into a major phenomenon in Japan and overseas. The franchise has continued through the TV anime, the earlier theatrical films, and the Shin Gekijouban series, which concluded with Shin Evangelion Gekijouban. In February 2026, the first festival event “EVANGELION:30+; 30th ANNIVERSARY OF EVANGELION” announced that a completely new series is in production, with further details still to come.
