September 19th marks “Myouji no Hi”, or “Family Name Day”, a special occasion rooted in Japanese history. It commemorates the “Heimin Myouji Kyoka Rei” (Common People’s Surname Permission Edict) issued on September 19th, 1870 (according to the old calendar, or October 13th in the modern calendar), which finally granted commoners the right to bear surnames.
In the vibrant world of anime, character surnames are incredibly diverse, ranging from those commonly found in real life to wonderfully unique, fictional creations. Often, the choice of kanji and the sound of a surname can powerfully emphasize a character’s individuality and charm. It’s not uncommon for fans to dream, “I wish I had a surname like that!”
Calling All Anime Fans: Which Anime Surname Do You Admire?
Following last year’s success, Anime!Anime! is once again inviting readers to participate in a special survey titled “Which anime character’s surname do you admire?”. We want to know which surnames from your favorite anime, manga, and games truly capture your imagination! Feel free to share your thoughts in a free-form response, telling us the character and the name of the work they belong to.
