A Timeless Omnibus of Animation Excellence

Released in 1995, `MEMORIES` is an omnibus anime film that is now celebrating its 30th anniversary. It masterfully weaves together three distinct and unforgettable short films: “Kanojo no Omoide” (Magnetic Rose), “Saishuu Heiki” (Stink Bomb), and “Taihou no Machi” (Cannon Fodder). Ootomo Katsuhiro not only served as the original creator but also took on the roles of executive producer and general director, bringing this innovative cinematic experience to life through close collaboration with a team of talented young creators.

Kanojo no Omoide (Magnetic Rose)

Directed by Morimoto Kouji, “Kanojo no Omoide” tells the chilling and visually stunning tale of astronauts returning from a mission who stumble upon a derelict spaceship. There, they become ensnared by the haunting and elaborate illusions crafted by a lonely, deceased genius soprano singer.

Saishuu Heiki (Stink Bomb)

“Saishuu Heiki”, directed by Okamura Tensai, plunges into dark humor to depict the unfortunate and absurd fate of a man. After accidentally taking a mysterious medicine, his body transforms into a biological weapon, producing deadly gas, leading to chaotic and unforeseen consequences.

Taihou no Machi (Cannon Fodder)

“Taihou no Machi”, personally directed by Ootomo Katsuhiro, offers a stark, poignant, and visually unique portrayal of an ordinary day in the lives of the inhabitants of a mobile cannon city. In this dystopic world, their sole purpose is to fire massive cannons, a relentless routine that shapes their entire existence.

Each short film within `MEMORIES` boasts an enduring, vivid charm that remains undiminished by time. “Kanojo no Omoide” captivated audiences with its pioneering use of CG and innovative image processing techniques. “Saishuu Heiki” overwhelms with its strikingly realistic depictions, meticulously crafted from extensive research. And “Taihou no Machi” stands out with its entire runtime presented as a single, continuous shot, a remarkable and ambitious feat of animation.

Another highlight contributing to the film’s lasting appeal is its impressive musical score. Kanno Youko, Miyake Jun, and Nagata Hiroyuki provided the compelling scores for the individual shorts, while Ishino Takkyu handled the captivating opening and ending themes. This collection of films truly shines in both its visual and auditory aspects, promising an unparalleled theatrical and 4K viewing experience that will immerse audiences.
