About Shuumatsu Touring

Shuumatsu Touring is a unique touring manga serialized in the monthly comic magazine Dengeki Maoh by Saitoo Sakae. It follows the journey of two girls, Youko and Airi, and their single off-road motorcycle, a Serow, as they traverse a ruined Japan. In this post-apocalyptic world, Youko and Airi take pictures at famous landmarks, camp in natural settings within cities, and embark on a journey through a world devoid of people. Riding tandem on their Serow, they experience an unparalleled sense of freedom, with no traffic jams or signal stops, making their journey truly limitless.

Production and Cast

The animation production for this captivating series is handled by Nexus. The adventurous girls are brought to life by Inagaki Konomi, who voices Youko, and Tomita Miyu, who voices Airi.

Episode 2 Recap: Yokohama and the Unexpected Encounter

In Episode 2, Youko and Airi travel from Hakone to Yokohama. Youko is deeply moved by the sight of the sea for the first time, exclaiming, “The ocean is really so vast!” When she instinctively shouts “Yaa-hoo!” Airi quickly reminds her, “That’s something you do in the mountains.”

As they enjoy the salty air and hum “Akai Kutsu” (Red Shoes), the duo comfortably rides their Serow. Nearing Minato Mirai, Youko observes, “Buildings are growing out of the sea… or rather, sinking?” In this post-apocalyptic world, global sea levels have risen, submerging the lower halves of buildings. The Bay Bridge, too, is broken midway, its structure incomplete.

Episode 2 Scene Cut

Feeling hungry, Youko excitedly sets up her portable fishing rod and lure (a metal jig), declaring, “I’m going to fish, fish, and fish a lot!” Meanwhile, Airi wanders off, stating she’s “going to look for something.”

Muttering “No food…” as she walks, Airi spots a flock of what appears to be black-tailed gulls. She rushes towards them, thinking “Yakitori!” but they fly away. However, she then discovers something truly unexpected.

Returning to Youko, Airi reports, “I picked up a person.” In her hands is a humanoid robot-like object, only the upper half. Since it’s unresponsive, they connect it to the motorcycle’s battery, and a reaction appears on the monitor where its face should be!

Episode 2 Scene Cut

The robot greets them cheerfully, “Hello, young ladies.” But upon seeing its own body, it exclaims in shock, “What is this?! What kind of body is this?!” and clutches its head, asking, “Who am I, anyway?”

Observing this, Airi begins to explain, “It’s not a robot; it’s a person.” She clarifies that it’s a military-model cyborg, whose body parts were replaced with machinery after severe injuries. The cyborg becomes absolutely thrilled, crying out, “Amazing, I’ve met a living human for the first time!” After Youko and Airi introduce themselves, the cyborg responds, “You can call me… Shuwa-chan.” Around Shuwa-chan’s neck hangs a family photo featuring what appears to be his wife and two young girls. Handwritten on the photo are the words: “A walk with Papa Robo at work, Yokosuka Port.”

Fan Reactions to Shuwa-chan

Online, Shuwa-chan’s name immediately sparked reactions from viewers, with many recalling classic sci-fi movies:

  • “Shuwa-chan, is he a Terminator?”
  • “Is Shuwa-chan’s name a reference to the Terminator cyborg connection?”
  • “I feel like Shuwa-chan is closer to RoboCop than Terminator.”

Following this discovery, everyone decides to head towards Yokosuka.

Here’s this week’s eye-catch:

While driving on the Yokohama-Yokosuka Road, Shuwa-chan’s forced reboot initiated. As Shuwa-chan expressed confusion, his backup memory began to load, bringing back memories of the past…

Upon arriving at a place that seemed to be the one depicted in the photograph, Shuwa-chan expressed regret, “I wanted to come sooner. Everyone might have been worried and waiting for me.”

Episode 2 Scene Cut

As evening falls, Youko invites Shuwa-chan, “Why don’t you come with us? We’re on a journey.” He replies, “Sounds good, I love traveling too,” but Shuwa-chan’s decision ultimately…

Emotional Impact on Viewers

Online, Shuwa-chan’s choice resonated deeply with viewers, who shared numerous emotional responses:

  • Shuumatsu Touring made me cry…”
  • “Episode 2 hit us with a heavy story.”
  • Shuumatsu Touring was quite poignant this week.”

  • “The road movie feel of encounters and partings is so good…”
  • “I thought Shuumatsu Touring would be a laid-back anime, but it’s actually quite touching.”
  • “This work is incredible… To portray the atmosphere of a ruined Yokohama, of everything after the end, in weekly episodes is amazing.”

After the broadcast, the original author, Saitoo Sakae, posted an illustration on their X account featuring Airi munching on a steamed bun, Youko fishing, and Shuwa-chan.

Inagaki Konomi, who voices Youko, also posted, “Thank you, Shuwa-chan… Did you notice the ED?? Tears again! You idiotーーーー!!!” Her memorable phrase “You idiotーーーー!!!” (Baka Yarou!) was certainly a highlight of Episode 2.

The ending credits even featured Shuwa-chan’s family, adding another layer of emotional depth.

Opening and Ending Themes

From Episode 2 onwards, Conton Candy’s “Touring” takes the spotlight as the opening theme. A non-credit movie for the opening was released after the broadcast.

The ending theme is “Glide” by Myuk. A non-credit movie for this theme was already released after Episode 1. Viewers are encouraged to look for the differences between the Episode 1 and Episode 2 ending movies!
